The 24th meeting of MPEG, the ISO/IEC Working Group in charge of defining standards for coding of moving pictures and associated audio, was held this week in Brussels, at the invitation of the Belgian National Body and hosted by DG XIII-B, Advanced Communication Technologies and Services, of the Commission of the European Communities.

This week the meeting produced the fourth version of the Working Draft of the so-called MPEG-2 standard, a generic audio-visual coding standard whose applications are expected to cover high-quality broadcasting, telecommunications and computers. At the meeting's end, MPEG confirmed that it is on schedule to approve the MPEG-2 Committee Draft at its next meeting in November '93 for submission to JTC1/SC29, the higher-level committee in charge of handling the balloting of the draft standard to ISO/IEC National Bodies.

Looking beyond MPEG-2, a new phase of work of MPEG will address the development of MPEG-4, an audio-visual coding standard targeted to very low bitrate applications, which are expected to require standard interoperable solutions in the second half of the decade. A new subgroup was established to collect and analyse applications and operational environments which will be used in the future steps of the technical development of the standard.
