CALSTART Puts New San Diego Electric Car Recharging Sites on the World Wide Web

Newest Additions to WWW.CLEANCARMAPS.COM Help Make County "EV-Ready"

Burbank, Calif.— August 7, 1997 — Drivers of the General Motors EV1 electric car need look no further than the World Wide Web to find where they can recharge their cars in the San Diego County region. CALSTART, the nation’s premier organization for the development and promotion of electric and natural gas vehicles, has added 10 brand new EV1 recharge sites to its popular Clean Car Recharge/Refuel Directory [ http://www.cleancarmaps.com/ ].

These site additions help the San Diego county area become "EV-ready" and are the latest updates to CALSTART’s easy-to-use, Internet-based map listings of electric vehicle and natural gas vehicle refuel locations.

"CALSTART is committed to helping build a refuel infrastructure for clean fuel vehicles in California and across the nation," said Michael J. Gage, president and CEO of CALSTART. "We go a step further toward this goal by providing the industry’s best information Web site for alternative fuel transportation. The addition of these San Diego maps really proves that the public recharge infrastructure exists and is growing every day."

The unique map directory has enabled countless electric vehicle enthusiasts and drivers alike to learn about the availability of public recharge infrastructure in a graphical, easy-to-use interface. Each mouse click upon a geographical map allows a user to zoom down to receive precise, street-level driving directions from one recharge location to the next.

The new sites were installed by Edison EV, a charger distributor for General Motors, which began leasing EV1s in California and Arizona earlier this year. Working with local businesses and in alliance with San Diego Gas & Electric, Edison EV recently unveiled the sites at, among other businesses, Costco stores, ScrippsHealth hospitals, the Mission Valley Center and the Wild Animal Park. The chargers have been underwritten by the San Diego Air Pollution Control District and Enova Corporation.

San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts said, "By establishing these chargers throughout the County, we have made a critical first step towards getting people out of their fuel-burning cars and into electric vehicles. I commend the businesses who have sponsored these chargers and hope this becomes a trend for businesses throughout the region and the nation."

``Creating a network of public charging stations for electric vehicles is a great challenge requiring this type of cooperation,'' said Edison EV President Diane 0. Wittenberg. ``We are pleased that our alliance with CALSTART has facilitated the publicity of so many public charging stations via the Internet."

The web maps show electric recharge sites, both conductive and inductive, as well as natural gas refueling locations. CALSTART extends its invitation to businesses, state agencies and others nationwide to cooperatively place new regional electric vehicle recharging and natural gas vehicle refueling sites on the popular web directory. The main home page is located at www.calstart.org .
