A lot of people have asked for NetBEUI functionality with Samba.
Unfortunately it is likely to be fairly platform-specific. A good start
would be to get NetBEUI going under Linux. The way Andrew Tridgell is
restructuring the Samba code makes it easier to support SMB over any
transport that a particular platform provides. Other possibilities
include SMB over IPX.

Alan Cox < iia...@iifeak.swan.ac.uk> is the coordinator of networking for
Linux. Recently he said:

Michael Callahan had a look at netbeui but decided it was quite hard. I
now know how to do netbeui fast, and fairly efficiently should anyone
  want to find a victim.

This is a job calling for quite a lot of experience. Any volunteers
should communicate with Alan, not me.

Alan also said:

Win95 uses a bastardised IPX by default. The kernel parts of the IPX
support needed for that are all present even in 1.2.x. As of current
1.3.x releases its on the edge of having enough support to do IPX over
  PPP even.

In other words, with Windows 95 it will be possible to connect using a
I-don't-have-to-think protocol (IPX) to Samba, once the transport
dependant stuff has been isolated in the Samba code. This means that the
other I-don't-have-to-think protocol (NetBEUI) isn't needed if all you
want to support is Windows 95.

Still, I think that there are a lot of people who want NetBEUI, and whose
sites have good reasons for not wanting IPX packets on their networks.

It can, sometimes. The best thing to do is go into MPTS, Configure your
Lan Adapters, and edit the configuration for Netbios over TCP/IP. Add
the host names and IP addresses to the Names and Broadcasts files. Then
change the driver parameters for Netbios over TCP and change the "Max
Number of Name-IP address pairs" to about 25 or so.

That ought to do it.

"Share-level access control" works fine for me on a fully patched Win95
June Test Release.

Are you using User-level access control? If so, where do you obtain your
user and group lists?

Our configuration is at the moment:

	3 * AIX 3.2.5 (RS6000) with samba 1.9.15p2
	some WfWg 3.11

I cannot get browsing or even master browsing to work.
I can get the list of shared devices when typing \\server
(Clients are all WfWg)

But even nmblookup -M -S -d3 cannot find the mashine it
runs on as master browser.

What can an expert read out of this result?

Message-ID: <199511221826.QAA10...@snfep1.if.usp.br>

I have a bunch of PC's served by a linux box running 1.8.05 and it works
very fine. Now I'm changing the hardware of the server, and I copied
the samba installation. Everything still works fine except for one
thing: smbd doesn't see one of the printers!!!

Here's the relevant part of the output of testparm:

Service parameters [laser]:
        comment: HP Laserjet IIIP
        path: /var/spool/samba
        username: laser
        create mask: 0700
        print ok: Yes
        printer: laser

Service parameters [matricial]:
        comment:
        path: /var/spool/samba
        username: matricial
        create mask: 0700
        print ok: Yes
        printer: matricial

Here's the output of smbclient '\\afrodite\matricial' -P :
Server time is Wed Nov 22 14:48:50 1995
Timezone is UTC-3
Password:
smb: \>

This is fine. However, smbclient '\\afrodite\lp' -P produces:
Server time is Wed Nov 22 14:48:14 1995
Timezone is UTC-3
Password:
first SMBtcon failed, trying again. ERRSRV - ERRinvnetname (Invalid network name
 in tree connect.)
SMBtcon failed. ERRSRV - ERRinvnetname (Invalid network name in tree connect.)
Perhaps you are using the wrong sharename, username or password?

The problem is that it doesn't see the lp printer. Here's the part of
/etc/printcap:

# HP Laser jet plus
laser|hplj|HP Laserjet IIIP:\
        :lp=/dev/lp2:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/laser:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:sf:\
        :lf=/var/spool/lpd/laser/erros:

lp|matricial|Epson Action Printer:\
        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:sf:\
        :lf=/var/spool/lpd/lp/erros:

You see that lp is a sinonym for matricial!!! Here's the output of lpc stat:

laser:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        no entries
        no daemon present
lp:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        no entries
        no daemon present

This shows that lpd sees it. Here's part of a log at debug level 3:

switch message SMBsesssetupX
sesssetupX:name=[CARLOS]
adding home directory carlos at /home/carlos
uid 9006 registered to name carlos
size=41
smb_com=0x73
[omitted]

checking for home directory lp gave /var/spool/lpd
adding home directory lp at /var/spool/lpd
11/22/95 14:55:51 error packet at line 118 cmd=112 (SMBtcon) eclass=2 ecode=6
size=35

Why is it seeing /var/spool/lpd instead of /var/spool/lpd/lp as in the
printcap? The lp directory does exist, and printing from linux works
fine.

This is driving me nuts :-(

Subject: Browsing Woes
Message-ID: <9511221925.AA06...@kraken.es.dupont.com>

Hi,

I've been working with Samba 1.9.14 and have noticed something very strange
about browsing. It appears to me that a client can only see the samba server
in a particular workgroup if it is a member of that workgroup. For instance,
if the server is broadcasting itself on a particular subnet in group GROUPA
and a particular client is on the same subnet in group GROUPB, then for some
reason, the client isn't seeing the samba server in the browse list for
GROUPA, but does if it is also in GROUPA. The server does appear in
the correct workgroup instantly if the server name is manually entered, a la
\\SERVER

Is this the way it is supposed to work, or can I expect to be able to have
the server appear in the browselist for the workgroup, even though the client
isn't a member of that particular group. BTW, there is a master browser for
the other workgroup, and you see the master browser listed in the browse list
for the other workgroup even though the server isn't being listed.

Thanks

Try "available = no"

you might also like to add "browsable = no"

Hello folks,

please excuse my question if it's been around before; I just joined the list
and would like to know if anyone has built samba under NS3.3?

My build has compiled after flooding my screen with all sorts of warnings but
ld broke. It flatly refused to do anything after displaying:

Linking smbd

where did this come from? Is it that the binaries have no clue as to what
architecture this should run on? Any quick fix suggestions? Will greatly
appreciate any info.

I've not seen this problem myself but it could be something to do with
your WINS. Just to check, in lib/smb.con in the [global] section have
a look at your 'password server' and 'security' settings to see which
machine the user is authenticating against.

I believe his Win95 is trying to reconnect to the other shares using the
password for the first share that it mounts. It's strange that he is not
being prompted for the correct password after the mount failure however.
