Samba on Linux for zSeries

Enjoy superb file and print services through centralization

Highlights

Overview

Samba on LINUX for zSeries
Allows you to consolidate your entire file/print system onto a single machine. This can help you significantly reduce costs and simplify administration while achieving enhanced scalability, availability and reliability.

Enabling UNIX and Microsoft Windows to coexist
Samba is a suite of programs that work together to allow clients to access a server's file space and printers via the Server Message Block (SMB) and Common Internet Filesystem (CIFS) protocols which can be run on almost every variant of UNIX.

Open Source

Samba is an open source software available free-of-charge according to the rules of the GNU Public License. It enables UNIX and Windows to coexist successfully on the same network, on the level of file and print sharing. It allows UNIX systems to move into a Windows 'Network Neighborhood'. With Samba, UNIX servers act like any other Windows server, offering their resources to SMB/CIFS clients so UNIX servers appear just like a PC server.

Functions

1 Available later this year.

Function Overview

Windows 95/98, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and OS/2 Warp clients do not require extra software to access a Samba server. These operating systems all support NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NBT) which is all that is required to access a Samba server.

Features

Samba's two key programs

smbd and nmbd translate file attributes, file names, user authentication and network architecture between UNIX, Linux and Windows systems.

Share level security

In share level security, the client only needs to provide a password to access a share. A username is not required and any files contained in the share can be accessed.

User level security

In user level security, the client must provide a username and password to access a share. Additionally, user level security can protect individual files within a share.

Windows servers

Samba implements most of the functions implemented by Windows servers, thus allowing resources to be easily shared with Windows clients of all types.
