Yahoo! Selects Inktomi as its Default World Wide Web Search Engine Partner

Yahoo! to Integrate Inktomi's Technology in Yahoo!'s Global Network of Properties

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and SAN MATEO, Calif. -- May 18, 1998 -- Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) and Inktomi Corporation today announced that they have entered an agreement giving Yahoo! the right to make Inktomi an integrated Yahoo! search results provider. Under the agreement, Inktomi will provide the underlying Web search engine to complement Yahoo!'s popular Web directory and navigational guide (www.yahoo.com). The companies expect to integrate the services within the next 90 days.

"Yahoo! remains committed to providing its users the best integrated Web search service throughout our comprehensive, global branded network of properties," said Jeff Mallett, chief operating officer of Yahoo! Inc. "Inktomi's tightly integrated search service complements Yahoo!'s leading content, communications, community and commerce services to offer a superior experience for all levels of Web users."

Inktomi has developed advanced search technology and has demonstrated its ability to scale with the rapid growth of the Web. Inktomi's award-winning search engine indexes more than 110 million documents, providing advanced functionality with the industry's most comprehensive search engine capability. Services powered by Inktomi's Search Engine* have received numerous accolades, including a five-star rating from Computer Life and the Editor's Choice award from PC Magazine. In addition, CNET, SmartMoney and Network World have heralded Inktomi as the best search engine on the Web.

"Yahoo! delivers a strong and effective distribution platform enabling Inktomi to reach a comprehensive, global Web audience," said Dave Peterschmidt, CEO of Inktomi. "The combination of Inktomi's innovative search capabilities with Yahoo!'s intuitive, high-quality navigation services will provide users with a powerful resource to maximize the value of the Internet."

Yahoo!, which is the most popular navigational guide to the Web, was founded on the principle of building a directory around subject-based, demographic and geographic content. Unlike search engines, which use automated "spiders" to electronically crawl the Web to capture and store sites in the search engine's index, Yahoo!'s staff of experts appropriately categorize content based on a Web site publisher's description of the content when the site is submitted for inclusion in the directory. Yahoo!'s directory features content and services within relevant context that can be browsed quickly and easily. The Inktomi search engine will be integrated with these services to provide users with additional search capability on the Web. Page views generated from Inktomi search results will become part of Yahoo!'s advertising and merchandising inventory.

Yahoo! continues to have the largest audience of any online service or site on the Web with more than 30 million unique users per month in the United States. As a result of its growing audience base and popularity, Yahoo! is ranked No. 1 in reach among all Web sites with work users (54.8 percent) and is second only to AOL among home users (44.4 percent). Yahoo! is also ranked No. 1 in exclusive usage among the top five navigational guides and search engines. (Media Metrix, March 1998)
