America Online, Inc. and Inktomi Expand Alliance to Collaborate on AOL Web Search Services

Agreement to Feature Inktomi Search Services on AOL, AOL.COM and AOL International Properties

CompuServe and ICQ to Continue Featuring Inktomi Search

Dulles, VA and San Mateo, CA, June 14, 1999 - America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company, and Inktomi Corporation, developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced a new agreement to incorporate Inktomi's search service into AOL's next generation Web search products, which will be available on several AOL brands, including AOL, AOL.COM and AOL International properties. This agreement expands the relationship between the two companies established in April 1998, under which AOL licensed Inktomi's Traffic Server™ network cache software.

AOL's new Inktomi-driven Web search product, launching later this year, will give AOL and CompuServe members and AOL.COM's Web-based users an exciting next-generation search product. In addition to providing traditional Internet search features, Inktomi will provide AOL's Web search with advanced search features, like photo search, foreign language search and multi-media search.

Inktomi's award-winning search service will deliver fresh and relevant search results from its database of over 100 million listings. The new search service is also designed to allow members and Web-based users to personalize their searches by choosing preferences that will be remembered each time that person performs a search.

"This new agreement with Inktomi represents a significant step in our development of new, best-of-breed search services on AOL brands and will have a direct and positive impact on our members' and Web-based users' search experience," said Barry Schuler, President of AOL Interactive Services. "America Online has always placed a priority on making the Internet easier and more convenient to navigate for our members and visitors to our family of brands, and working with Inktomi to offer search services that deliver fresh, meaningful and targeted information is key to that mission. And by delivering multi-media, photo and foreign language search, we will continue to offer our members and Web-based users state-of-the-art search services."

Mr. Schuler continued: "We are also looking forward to continuing the strong relationship AOL has built with Inktomi. AOL has been using Inktomi's Traffic Server network caching software for over a year, supporting traffic of over 2.5 billion URLs a day to our members. In addition, CompuServe and ICQ are already featuring Inktomi search services. With the close relationship we've already established, we are eager to bring that same quality of service to our other AOL, Inc. brands."

"We have a powerful partnership with AOL, one that we believe will give millions of AOL members and visitors worldwide a richer, more intuitive and meaningful Web experience," said David Peterschmidt, president and CEO of Inktomi. "Inktomi's focus is on building the infrastructure of the Internet, and today's announcement builds on Inktomi's strong relationship with America Online and marks our broadest alliance with a company across both our portal and network suite of products. With our Web search services powering several AOL properties, it gives us the broadest distribution of any search service available and extends our leadership in the marketplace. We look forward to working with AOL to further build on our alliance with new products and services, to make the Internet an increasingly natural part of people's daily lives."
