Inktomi Extends Momentum for Paid Inclusion Program

Inktomi Index Connect and Search Submit Content Inclusion Services Improve Overall Quality and Scope of Information Available to Internet Users

Foster City, Calif., August 16, 2001 -- Inktomi Corp. (NASDAQ: INKT), developer of scalable network infrastructure software, today announced a range of InktomiŽ Index Connect™ and Search Submit customers and resellers as a part of the Inktomi paid inclusion program. Now with more than 100 Index Connect customers and more than 30,000 Search Submit customers, Inktomi's extensive content inclusion services offer new customers such as Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com, NORDSTROM.com, and Ziff-Davis the ability to better manage their Web presence to attract targeted visitors while providing Internet users with comprehensive and highly relevant search results.

Inktomi's content inclusion services address the challenges of the growing Internet to provide Internet users with timely, high quality search results. As millions of Web pages are added to the Internet daily, content publishers face new challenges in ensuring their most current content can be found. Similarly, search engines must incorporate new methods to crawl and index the Internet while sifting through an increasingly cluttered Web in order to provide users with accurate results. By improving the overall quality and scope of information available in the Inktomi search index, users can expect highly relevant search results with more up-to-date content.

"We want to provide Internet consumers with access to our most current content and products so customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online," said Daniel Malarkey, general manager at Amazon.com "and Inktomi helps us do just that."

"Inktomi's paid inclusion program build direct relationships with content publishers to improve the quality of content available to users," said Troy Toman, vice president and general manager, Inktomi Search Solutions Division. "With more than 100 Index Connect customers and more than 30,000 Search Submit customers, we are seeing extended benefits with our program. By driving high quality visitors to customers' sites while continuing to deliver highly relevant search results to users, Inktomi is effectively tackling the increasingly cluttered Web."

Inktomi Index Connect

For large Web sites containing more than 1,000 URLs

The Inktomi Index Connect program provides large content publishers with the ability to better manage their content, control how frequently their site is crawled and ensure their presence is best represented on the Web. With a pay-for-performance program, large content publishers have more control over how and when their Web pages are indexed. For example, an online news publisher can control how frequently its site is crawled to make breaking news stories available in real-time, or an online commerce site can publish updated inventory information and inform search engine users of timely special offers at its store. New Index Connect customers include Amazon.com, Crutchfield.com, NORDSTROM.com, and Ziff-Davis. The expanded database is available throughout the current Inktomi network of leading portals.

Inktomi is also announcing the addition of new Index Connect resellers. 24/7 WebSiteResults, Inceptor, iProspect, eLuminator, Outrider, and TrafficLeaderŽ will join e-centives, Looksmart and Position Technologies with the ability to submit their clients' content directly to Inktomi.

Inktomi Search Submit

For small content publishers with less than 1,000 URLs

Smaller content publishers can subscribe to Inktomi Search Submit, a service offered through distribution partners including ineedhits, Outrider, Position Technologies and VeriSign. This service provides inclusion in the Inktomi search index and an automatic 48 hour refresh on the content submitted for an annual fee. Additionally, to ensure that major charities, educational establishments and other non-profit organizations have an equal opportunity to make their content available in the search index, Inktomi is providing inclusion services free of charge to qualified organizations. Both Index Connect and Search Submit programs complement the existing crawling and indexing methods used to generate the overall Inktomi search index.
