IBM e-business Software for Linux for S/390

SOMERS, N.Y., May 17, 2000 . . . IBM S/390 customers can draw from a broad portfolio of e-business software to integrate Linux applications into the enterprise. New IBM software products, available later this year, will provide high-speed connections between Linux applications and S/390 data, transaction, and messaging services; data management and web-serving capabilities for Linux applications; Java; and Tivoli management support. Among the planned lineup of IBM software to support Linux for the S/390 server are:

IBM also announced plans to offer Tivoli Storage Manager Client for Linux for S/390, which will provide automated backup, archive and disaster recovery services for managing and protecting Linux data.

The IBM middleware for Linux for S/390 will give customers flexibility to use Linux as a web server to link mission-critical applications running on S/390 operating systems directly to the Web. Customers also can take advantage of S/390 reliability, security, scalability and nonstop operation to run Linux applications concurrently with other line-of-business applications, such as enterprise resource planning, customer service, and supply chain management.

In addition, customers can take advantage of the new middleware capabilities to increase the integration and performance of the Linux applications running on the S/390. For example, back-end mission critical applications running on OS/390, VM or VSE will be accessible, at near memory speeds, bypassing the network connection between the two applications.

Customers also can gain the inherent cost savings of consolidating workloads from literally hundreds of Linux systems onto a single S/390 system.
