SAN FRANCISCO, July 9, 1987 -- Apple Computer Inc. said that its new software subsidiary would be named the Claris Corporation, reflecting ''clarity and distinctiveness.'' Apple said in April that it planned to spin off its software sales effort into an independent company in which it would retain a minority stake.
