Apple Promotes Spindler to Chief Operating Officer; Loren Resigns

Cupertino, California--January 29, 1990--John Sculley, chairman and chief executive officer of Apple Computer, Inc., today promoted Michael H. Spindler, previously president, Apple Europe, to the new position of chief operating officer (C.O.O.) and executive vice president.  Sculley said the promotion of Spindler to C.O.O. will help Apple better coordinate business operations while streamlining day-to-day activities.  The following business functions will report to Spindler:  Apple USA, Apple Pacific, Apple Europe, Worldwide Product Marketing and Worldwide Manufacturing.  Spindler will report directly to Sculley.

Separately, Allan Z. Loren announced his resignation from the position of president, Apple USA, effective immediately.

"Spindler brings operational strength,  strategic excellence and international acumen to the new C.O.O. position," Sculley said.  "These skills are aligned with the challenges Apple faces in the coming decade:  leveraging and streamlining our worldwide resources while ensuring consistency in all of our sales and marketing efforts."

Spindler, 47, has directed AppleUs European business unit since 1988, overseeing all European sales, marketing and headquarter activities.  Before that, Spindler contributed to the significant revenue growth of Apple's operations outside the U.S. as vice president, Sales and Marketing, Apple International.  Spindler, a ten-year Apple veteran, joined the company in 1980.

Regarding Loren's resignation, Sculley said the following: "As president Apple USA, Allan Loren furthered Apple's acceptance and credibility with large, institutional customers.  His comprehensive information technology background, operational discipline and hard work helped lay a foundation for even greater successes for Apple USA in this increasingly important market.  He has our best wishes in his new endeavors."

In addition to Spindler, the following Apple executives continue to report to John Sculley in their respective positions:  Jean-Louis Gasse, senior vice president and president, Apple Products; Albert A. Eisenstat,  senior vice president and secretary;  Joseph A. Graziano, senior vice president and chief financial officer;  and Kevin J. Sullivan, senior vice president, Human Resources.

Apple Europe expects to announce a replacement for Spindler shortly.  Until a replacement for Loren is hired, Spindler will be acting president, Apple USA.
