Copland

Excitement and anticipation is building for Copland, the next major release of the Mac OS that advances the system in the areas of performance, stability, ease of use and overall integration of Apple technologies. Copland will offer developers solid business opportunities and a technology platform to enable great and innovative products for all the world's markets. During the Conference, attendees will receive a technology update from last year, and an in-depth look at the strategy, key technology components, and APIs for Copland.

Topics will cover all aspects of the system ranging from the User Experience and Text/Imaging to the runtime model as it applies to application, extension, driver and server developers. Sessions will also detail compatibility and adoption strategies to help in effective product planning.

MacOS: Goals, Strategy and Technology Update

Hear what Apple is doing to ensure the success of the Mac OS and the success of our partners and customers. If you attended last year's sessions, hear about important improvements to Mac OS since last year.

Technical Transition to Copland

The transition to Copland will be a phased one. This session will detail compatibility strategies and how to best prepare your System 7 product to anticipate Copland.
Copland Runtime Model Learn the basics of the new Copland runtime architecture and its advantages over System 7. You'll learn about memory architecture, addressing model, heap management, tasking, synchronization, processes, and inter-process communication.
Copland User Experience Overview Copland includes many new facilities to enhance the user experience of the MacOS and your products. Hear an overview of these technologies ‹ such as appearances, navigation services, assistance, help and delegation, the feature manager, and workspaces.
Copland Human Interface Services Learn about Copland technologies for implementing visual interfaces such as HI Objects. You'll hear how these components can be customized and how they significantly simplify and enhance interface code.
Copland Configuration Management In this session youšll hear how Copland changes configuration management. Learn about new services that dramatically improve both user and developer experience of identifying and manipulating configuration and preference information.
Copland Help & Assistance Services Copland Assistance and Help Services improves user productivity by focusing users on their goals rather than on the details of computer use. Learn about Balloon Help, Apple Guide, Tips, and Experts.
Managing Document Content Hear about the creation, manipulation, and presentation of documents and their content in Copland. Learn how Copland expands content-oriented services and increases the user's ability to access and manipulate information.
Decline and Fall of the Event Loop Polling and WaitNextEvent are things of the past. This session will teach you why Apple Events and dispatching are the future for easy-to-program and high-performance products.
Copland Text Learn all about text with Copland ‹ from new keyboard drivers, the new model for text events, Unicode and Text Objects, new text services such as find-by-content, and the new line layout model and text rendering.
More Copland Runtime This session builds on Copland Runtime 101. Learn about the creation and maintenance of the runtime environment, including booting, system initialization, process management, workspace switching, etc. We'll also discuss the implications of mixing new services with compatibility services.
Copland Application Types Learn about the alternatives Copland provides for building your products, such as Copland-only applications, utility applications, transitional applications and background servers. You'll also hear about how you can migrate your applications from System 7 to Copland.
Copland Extension Services Extensibility is a key benefit of Copland. Hear about the different mechanisms available to support extensibility and how they are used by components throughout the system.
Copland Graphics and Font Rendering Learn about Copland's graphics and text rendering services, including their reentrant and resolution-independent foundation, acceleration, integrated line layout, the Open Font Architecture, and ColorSync.
Copland I/O Overview Learn about the I/O system's breakthrough performance and flexibility. We'll focus on technologies and policies for all device families, a Roadmap to detailed family information, and information on booting and Open Firmware.
Copland Mass Storage I/O Hear about all I/O families involved in moving data to and from block storage devices ‹ including the File System, SCSI, and Block Storage. This session is primarily for developers of plug-ins for these components.
Working with Copland DRI Learn about the documentation, software, and goodies that will be on the Copland Developer Release CD-ROM and how to make progress with this milestone release of the Mac OS.
Copland Business Opportunities/Co-Marketing Copland will offer business opportunities even more compelling than the introduction of the Power Macintosh. Learn how the global market will shape up for Copland and comarketing opportunities.
