Akers Joining Times Board

The New York Times Company said yesterday that John F. Akers, president and chief executive officer of the International Business Machines Corporation, had been named a member of The Times Company's board of directors.

Mr. Akers, 50 years old, became president of I.B.M. in 1983 and its chief executive officer in February this year.

He joined I.B.M., which is based in Armonk, N.Y., in 1960 and has served in a number of positions.

Mr. Akers was born in Boston in 1934. He was graduated from Yale University.

He is a trustee of the California Institute of Technology and a member of the advisory council of Yale's School of Organization and Management.

Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, chairman and chief executive officer of The Times Company, in announcing the appointment of Mr. Akers, said it would increase the membership of the board to 13.
