OS/360 Archive CD?

Pat Barron

Dec 8, 1999

Yes, this is a newbie FAQ, but the archives aren't as helpful as one might
like....

The Hercules web page makes mention of OS/360 having been released to the
public domain, and available on an archive CD created by Rick Fochtman.
Looking through the archives, someone asked just recently how to get this
CD, and the response was to contact Mr. Fochtman to see if his offer to
create CDs was still valid. Unfortunately, the OneList archiver seems to
mutilate all e-mail addresses, changing the host name to "xxxxxxxx.xxx"
(in an attempt, I suppose, to foil spammers), so I don't know how to get
in touch with him. Can someone forward his contact info to me?

(IBM'ers: You'll notice that I am posting from an IBM e-mail address ...
if these materials are available from an internal IBM site, please let
me know and I can download them from there - I tried searching the IBM
internal web, but could not find anything....).

Thanks,
--Pat.

Hello Pat!

So IBM'ers watch Hercules grow too - nice to know ;-)

It seems af if the only thing I'm able to bring this list - besides
asking dumb questions - is informing about how to get hold of the OS/260
CD - BUT I do it happily and speaking about it - I have still not got
the CD myself. Maybe it is shipped from the US to Europe in the original
sense of the word 'SHIPPED' - I have been waiting for a month or so -
but I figure that Rick is doing some bulk-shipping here.
Now, here we go pasting again:

>>Where can I find the OS/360 system?
>Goto http://www.snipix.freeserve.co.uk/hercules/mftr33.tar.gz

You allready knew that - but -

>>What is Fochtman's CD?
>AFAIK it's the full blown OS/360 (MFT) granted to public domain by IBM.
>I don't know when.
>A way to signup for the CD is to mailto:Rick.Fochtman@...
>I guess that the MFT r33 on the Hercules-site came from the very same CD?
>I signed up for it myself - didn't receive it yet.
>I don't know if there's sourcecode on the CD too?

Being europeans, having ordered the CD 'over there' - we'll have to be
patient.....

I would like to make a suggestion, trying to compensate:

How do the european Herculers find the idea about setting up an european
distribution of the OS/360 CD?
It could be kept as a 'Hercules Community' only feature! Until further -
we're around 30 in total on this list, so a single CD-burner-equipped
person would do.
I've haven't got the CD yet myself, but other europeans on this list do
have it.
So if one of those, reading this, and who does not find it amusing to
carry the load, send me a copy and I would [gladly] take orders, burn
and distribute - for a fee covering media and postage only!

I recently spoke to Rick and he said the response has been great (over
125!),
but it hasn't shipped yet.
He is considering seeing if we could put up an FTP site for the cd somewhere
Thanks,
Boe Franklin
