SHARE at Long Beach

Hello everyone,

Hands up all those attending SHARE 96 in Long Beach! Since I'm
making the trek from Down Under to attend, I'd like to try and meet
as many Herculeans as possible.

Some time ago the possibility of a Hercules BOF was suggested, can I
re-open the topic?

Time-wise, after Jay's session on Monday night would probably be an
opportune time. Any locals care to suggest a venue?

Cheers,
Vic

Gee, thanks, guy...just what I needed to ease my nerves: hearing someone's
coming from Australia to hear me talk. :-)

Good question. I'll certainly be there.

Tentatively, and on my own nickel, but it looks like it'll happen. (Compaq
will only pay once a year unless it's something of direct business
interest.) It helps that I'll be visiting a friend the weekend before.

Won't you be demonstrating how perfectly the COMPAQ line
of end-user (personal use) machines will be able to run IBM
mainframe software? Won't there be potential for various possible
clients to want to buy a COMPAQ machine - such as you'll be
using - so that they can do the same?

Sounds like a direct business interest to me ...

I tried that argument already. Didn't go over too well, darn it.

If we can get that, I'll be first in line. I *like* Alphas. Failing that,
though, a nice quad PIIIX-1000 will do nicely. Heck, even a dual. For now,
though, I've replaced the quad PPro-200 ProLiant 6000 development system
with a dual PIII-550 ProLiant 1850R, with four 18GB drives and hardware
RAID...got tired of circuit breakers blowing when I ran the wrong set of
computers.

BTW, the ProLiant ML350 is getting pretty inexpensive, and can be juiced up
to dual 933s and a bunch of RAM and hardware RAID, too...it's worth a look.

(Hey, gotta do SOMETHING to keep the stock price up.)

I live in Irvine and am therefore more "local" than most (except Stuart)

May I suggest one of the following?

A restaurant on the Queen Mary. There are 3 or 4 good restaurants on the
ship and I think that the access to them is free if one enters thru the
hotel. Parking
is still expensive, but I can pick up as many as 7 others as I have a large
passenger
van, if need be.

Also there is an excellent restaurant just north of the ship's berth that
has no
parking.

I will have to see if they take reservations, which a large group would
necessitate.

There is a seafood restaurant across the bay (I will have to look up the
names
of all of these, and publish them after there is comment on what people
would
like).

The one across the bay from the Queen mary is more accessible from the
convention
center as it is on the downtown side of the Los Angeles River, which is what
the
queen mary is sitting in. I don't know how they are with large parties, and
if it is
to be held on a busy night, how they would do with reservations for a large
party.

Any other ideas?

I am not going to attend Share due to costs and lack of much interest in
anything
buy Jay's talk (which may be excellent, but a tad over what I can afford to
attend
a single lecture). I therefore hope that the gathering is made somewhere in
the
"free" zone.

If someone can suggest a hotel location available due to their company
having a
hospitality suite, or other, that might work out, but so far obviously noone
has
stepped up to the plate on that.

Are there any time constraints? I have heard "after Jay's talk" but I don't
know
when that is. Perhaps since all attending Share are there for the meeting,
there
is an earlier time that all would be free?

Let me know and I'll post what I find out on at least going to one of these
restaurants
in a later note.

This works for me, especially since I'm staying aboard the Queen Mary (it's
one of the convention hotels). I'm looking forward to that as well.

This is okkay with me, certainly.

The talk is on Monday at 6 PM, and is scheduled for an hour...and I'd like
to make Ellis's demo, at least for a little bit. Between that and people
wanting to talk after the talk, perhaps Tuesday would be a better bet
(especially since there's not a SCIDS session scheduled that evening).
