OT: Anyone need a consultant sysadmin/sysprog/developer?

Jay Maynard

Apr 10, 2003

I've been laid off by my previous employer. For lots of reasons, I'd rather
not relocate from Fairmont, Minnesota. Anyone out there need a consultant or
telecommuter? I'm willing to travel quite a bit (though not 100%, if I can
help it), and can also telecommute. I've got experience in a wide range of
Unix and Linux systems and OS/390, and development experience in C, Borland
Delphi, Perl, and several assemblers.

Please contact me off-list if you think you or your company can use my
services.

Ouch, sorry to hear that Jay,
I have been out of work since Sept. Times are rough for those not willing
to relocate, but
I would recommend some major networking on your part, Internet groups,
local groups, previous friends & employers, keep a good record of who you
contact, follow up with them regularly.... I have been offered 3 jobs
since Sept.

It seems like there are a lot of jobs in NJ & NY, if you want a list of
jobs I can send you my bookmarks for the last 7 months of looking, it may
help....

Ken,

Uh, no, there aren't a lot of jobs around here. I was laid-off on
26 June 2001 and haven't found anything (presently working as a
cook). My friend, another old hand SysProg, was laid-off Feburary,
2000 and also has found nothing. I've interviewed, but 1) never
hear anything back and 2) the jobs in question are NEVER filled, not
that there are a lot of them, anyhow. Bank of Tokyo in Jersey City
is a case in point. They have, they say, been looking (and
interviewing) for years. They interviewed me and under no
circumstances would I work there (I'll supply details offline to
anyone interested), but the point is moot as I never heard back from
them.

Regards,
Bomber

The European view - Mainframe systems employment in general

Sean@...

Apr 10, 2003

Hello all,

maybe we should start a separate list for the above. The
situation in Europe is even worse than in the States.

There are a lot of people I know sitting on their fingers, waiting for
the "upturn".

Adieu

John

India seems to be the only place not having this problem... I got laid
off in October 2001, (in Florida)
as my company announced they were moving most of the programming jobs to
India... After a
considerable amout of looking I decided I was better off retiring
several years earlier than I had
planned - and so now I get to write the software that I want to....

and i'm really enjoying playing with hercules. Much thanks to those
that dreamed it up, and more to all
of the folks that are enhancing, maintaining, or creating software to
run under it!!!

Hello,

I read some posts about MVS systems programmers being out of work
for a long time (on this list). I know it can be devastating to be laid off
and lose you income.

If anyone on this list wishes to find a job in Manhattan,
please contact me offline, and I would be happy to help by submitting
your resume to my personnel dept here at Smith Barney/Citigroup.

Also, thank you for all of your instructions about installing Hercules.
I will attempt to download the huge Turnkey file on my Sisters PC
(she has a broadband connection) and copy it to a CD and then
install it on my computer at home.
