Making Mobile Multimedia a reality - with the Nokia 3rd Generation System
Solution
(September 27, 1999) Nokia unveils its complete 3rd Generation System Solution,
providing a complete Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) network for
mobile operators.
This cutting edge system will enable true personal mobile multimedia
applications and services, when combined with future multimedia handsets. Based
on public 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Program) industry standards, the
Nokia WCDMA System builds wide-area radio access on top of an evolved GSM core,
providing a complete network solution for both new and existing
telecommunications operators.
"Further to help operators meet the early anticipated demand for Mobile
Multimedia services, Nokia's WCDMA System has been designed to reduce start-up
and operating costs associated with deploying a new network," says Eero
Vallström, Vice President, WCDMA Radio Access Systems, Nokia Networks. "A
seamless Mobile Internet and Mobile Intranet Application continuity can be built
from GSM through General Packet Data Services to 3rd Generation, enabling Global
IP Mobility."
"The harmonisation of Third Generation standards has been successful and the
full WCDMA standard will soon be agreed, enabling early implementation of
services. The co-operation with all those involved; operators, partners and
other suppliers has been constructive and fruitful. This supports the success in
maintaining the schedule to commercially introduce WCDMA systems in 2001."
Nokia's new Base Station System (BSS) solution includes the new Nokia UltraSite
site solution, Cellular Transmission, a WCDMA Radio Network Controller (RNC),
Network Management System (NMS), planning tools and services. All these elements
follow the open standards of the 3GPP and GSM - supporting multivendor
integration and free competition. A unique feature with the Nokia UltraSite
family is that it is specifically designed to build the bridge from Second
Generation networks to 3rd Generation globally.
As existing Second Generation networks evolve to 3rd Generation, GPRS is the
packet mobile core platform and radio access, enabling Mobile Internet and
Mobile Intranet. GPRS networks provide a smooth and cost-effective path to the
multimedia networks of tomorrow through the reuse of existing GPRS investments.
Time-critical voice and video services will continue using the circuit-switched
path through the mobile switching centre (MSC). Non-time-critical services, such
as messaging and retrieval services, will use packet-switching through GPRS
network elements.
The Nokia 3rd Generation Solution includes end-to-end professional service
solutions for future Third Generation operators. The scope includes Mobile
Multimedia application creation services, as well as services to plan,
implement, integrate and manage a 3rd Generation network. The Nokia Network
Management System, Nokia TotemTM Network Planning System for WCDMA, and service
management solutions are an integral part of Nokia's service solution. Nokia
integrates all of these into a seamless 3G network. Nokia Network Optimisation
Service and Nokia Online Services helps keep the network operating at peak
performance.
