Cingular Wireless First To Implement Inter-Carrier Roaming

Customers to access high-speed data services as they travel

ATLANTA, GA; December 5, 2001 - Cingular Wireless, the nation's second largest wireless carrier, today announced the industry's first implementation of inter-carrier roaming for GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) high-speed data services. Beginning immediately, Cingular GPRS customers in Las Vegas, Nevada and Spokane and Seattle, Washington will be able to roam across any other Cingular properties, as well as on other carriers' networks where GPRS is available. The capability is the first of its kind in the United States.

The roaming agreements allow Cingular's GPRS customers to seamlessly access these external networks to use Cingular's Wireless Internet Express, which provides an improved wireless Internet experience with "always on" access to information and improved data speeds.

The next phase of the implementation, which will be available later this month, will enable Cingular's customers in the southeast to enjoy these same benefits. The southeast region includes North Carolina, South Carolina, coastal Georgia, and Eastern Tennessee.

"This is the first step in enabling Cingular customers to seamlessly enjoy all the benefits Cingular's Wireless Internet Express has to offer on a nationwide basis," said Bill Clift, Chief Technology Officer at Cingular. "Cingular customers will be the first in the United States to take advantage of truly mobile high speed data services."

The offering, which is provided via Cingular's GSM technology, now allows Cingular customers to use all of their voice and data services where GPRS is available and also includes Cingular's SMS services, which the company has been offering since 1997.
