Cingular Powers New Palm™ i705 Wireless Handheld

Nationwide Network, Technology Innovation Help Put The "Wireless" in Palm's Eagerly Anticipated New Device

Atlanta, January 28, 2002 - The new Palm™ i705 handheld, an "always-on" wireless device with secure, "push" e-mail for enterprise and personal e-mail access that was launched today by Palm, Inc., is enabled solely on Cingular Wireless' nationwide, Mobitex-based wireless packet data network.

Cingular also provided Palm with the cutting edge technology that interfaces with the MyPalm™ wireless portal and allows Palm i705 handheld customers to activate the Palm.Net̉ wireless service for their device via the Cingular network. Called Wireless Subscription Management, this technology innovation was pioneered by Cingular Wireless subsidiary Cingular Interactive (formerly BellSouth Wireless Data) and its initial version was first introduced on Palm's revolutionary Palm VII wireless handheld in 1998.

The new Palm i705 handheld is the only wireless solution in the marketplace that delivers all of the following benefits: always-on "push" email from up to eight email accounts; secure, end-to-end, behind-the-firewall email for corporate users;

AOL® software, including AOL Instant Messenger® (AIM); web browsing via Google search or URL entry; plus classic Palm Personal Information Management (PIM) features, such as Date Book and Address Book -- combined in a sleek silver one-piece package. The Palm i705 handheld is available this week in U.S. retail stores where Palm handhelds can be purchased today, and online at The Palm Store (http://store.palm.com).

Cingular Wireless' nationwide Mobitex packet data network provides extensive and seamless coverage in 260 metropolitan areas, high reliability, low latency and other key features. In addition to the Palm i705 handheld, it is the power behind such cutting edge solutions as the BlackBerry™ wireless e-mail solution, America Online's AOL Mobile Communicator SM, and Fidelity AnywhereSM. In addition, the Mobitex network drives Cingular's Corporate E-mail PLUS and Interactive Messaging PLUS services, and custom solutions for Fortune 1000 companies like FedEx, Honeywell and Sears. Smart Business Magazine selected Cingular's Mobitex network as an MVP Award Winner as the "Best of the Best" wireless data network in 2001 and 1999, and Network Computing cited the Cingular network as a Finalist for its 2001 "Well Connected Award."

"Palm and Cingular Wireless have been long-standing partners in delivering innovative wireless services to the marketplace, beginning with the introduction of the Palm VII handheld," said Kevin Hell, senior vice president of product management, Solutions Group, at Palm, Inc. "Cingular's expertise and experience in wireless data and its powerful nationwide network have contributed significantly to Palm's success in the world of wireless and will continue to do so as we move into the next frontier with the i705."

"Palm's i705 handheld is the latest example of the many cutting edge wireless devices that are enabled for Cingular's networks," said Stephen Krom, Vice President - Business Marketing and Product Development, for Cingular Wireless. "The Palm i705, with its 'always-on' access to enterprise and personal e-mail, has been eagerly anticipated by the marketplace. We're pleased to be playing a key role in putting the 'wireless' in the new Palm i705 wireless handheld, and helping ensure that the user experience is an excellent one."
