Sony Ericsson launches its first phone for the Americas, the T61g

Tuesday, March 5 2002

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications today unveiled the T61g, the first mobile phone to be launched under the company’s brand in the United States. The T61g is one of the first phones to operate on both the 850 and 1900 MHz GSM frequencies. The 850 MHz frequency takes advantage of existing networks being transitioned from TDMA to GSM technology. The T61g also helps operators manage transition capacity with its inclusion of Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) technology.

The T61g features e-mail as well as two-way text and enhanced messaging services (EMS) and mobile chat. The T61g also supports GPRS, so users can enjoy “always on” connectivity to the Mobile Internet. The five-way joystick and large display makes it easy to use the T61g advanced features. The T61g is ideal for mobile professionals needing to access information on the go. With its built-in organizer, consumers can easily synchronize their calendar and contact listing and create reminders and to-do lists.

The T61g’s features the “Magic Word” voice-activated feature and Bluetooth™ accessory compatibility. The “Magic Word” feature allows users to choose a key word or phrase that, when spoken, alerts the phone that the user wants to make a voice-activated call. Magic Word is only one of the T61g’s advanced voice-activated features, giving consumers improved handsfree access to dial, answer and select menu options.

“We believe the T61g will be popular among professionals who want a reliable, feature-rich phone with advanced voice features for handsfree control,” said Bo Larsson, Corporate Vice President and General Manager, Sony Ericsson, North America.

The T61g is small in size and weight at 121 x 54 x 23mm and 125 grams. The phone features a strong comfortable design with a built-in long-life lithium battery and an internal antenna that allows users up to 8 hours of talk time and up to 10 days of standby time.

Innovative accessories for the T61g include the Sony Ericsson CommuniCam™ TM MCA-10, which allows users to shoot and send digital pictures, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, including the Bluetooth wireless headset and Sony Ericsson SmartBack™ accessories. Sony Ericsson SmartBack accessories fully integrate into the back of the phone and house accessories such as a retractable portable handsfree.

The T61g is scheduled for commercial launch in Q2 2002. The T61g will also be featured at the CTIA Wireless 2002 trade show in Orlando, Florida, in the US, from March 18-20, 2002 at Sony Ericsson Booth Number 1463.
