UIQ Technology unveils UIQ 3.0 delivering full one-handed and pen-based operation

3GSM World Congress, Cannes, France, 23 February 2004 - UIQ Technology today unveiled UIQ 3.0 - the new release of the UIQ Platform. UIQ 3.0 offers mobile phone manufacturers who license Symbian OS the choice of developing smaller form factor smartphones with either pen-based, touch-screen operation or full one-handed operation, providing a unique opportunity for high level code-reuse in product development and a high level of product differentiation. This also allows application developers to create applications that can be implemented on both pen-based and one-handed smartphones with a minimum of extra effort. For operators, UIQ 3.0 offers extensive configuration opportunities through the Operator Configuration Package which will facilitate service differentiation.

UIQ is a proven and successful user-interface platform based on Symbian OS and has been incorporated in six highly successful mobile phone families: the Sony Ericsson P900 and P800 smartphones, BenQ P30 and the Motorola's 3G A920, A925 and A1000 phones

"We are delighted to work with our licensees and continue supporting them to bring successful and innovative smartphones to the market," said Johan Sandberg, CEO, UIQ Technology. "UIQ 3.0 is a platform that offers the framework and the tools to innovate and create highly differentiated smartphones - with one software base without duplicating engineering effort ultimately maximizing return on investment for our licensees."

"With both the P800 and P900 smartphones enjoying great market success, we are excited about the announcement of the further expanded capabilities of UIQ 3.0, enabling development of both one-handed and pen-based smartphones, which will enable Sony Ericsson to take advantage of the growing market demand for Symbian OS phones," said Per Aspemar, Vice President and Deputy Head of Product Development. We are delighted about the unique opportunities that UIQ 3.0 provides mobile phone manufacturers, application developers and operators."

"Symbian supports the development of a portfolio of user interfaces for Symbian OS phones and we are delighted to see this broadening of UI choice for handset manufacturers," said Marit Doving, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Symbian. "UIQ Technology's new platform, UIQ 3.0, gives phone manufacturers the ability to create a range of differentiated, innovative Symbian OS phones with different modes of operation and a high degree of code re-use, reducing development cost and risk as well as speeding time to market."

UIQ 3.0 is expected to be commercially available by Q4 2004 with phones shipping in 2005.

UIQ 3.0 is based on Symbian OS v9. Symbian OS is the global open industry standard operating system for smartphones and is licensed to the world's leading handset manufacturers.
