Digital Research To Modify GEM

The New York Times

San Francisco -- September 30, 1985 -- Digital Research Inc. of Monterey, Calif., said that it would modify its GEM operating systems programs to avoid claims by Apple Computer Inc. that the programs violate Apple's copyrights.

Judy Mervis, a spokesman for Digital Research, said the GEM programs, which allow I.B.M. compatible personal computers to operate with pull-down windows, icons and a mouse, would be altered to make them less similar in operation and appearance to Apple's programs that run on Macintosh. The modifications are subject to review by Apple. Digital Research also agreed to pay Apple an undisclosed amount and to work on Apple software development, but denied any infringement of Apple rights.
