Compaq Computer Introduces Deskpro 386 Personal Computer

NEW YORK -DJ- COMPAQ COMPUTER CORP. SAID IT INTRODUCED THE COMPAQ DESKPRO 386 PERSONAL COMPUTER, WHICH IT SAID ITS THE FIRST PERSONAL COMPUTER TO UTILIZE THE NEXT-GENERATION 32-BIT INTEL 80386 MICROPROCESSOR WHILE MAINTAINING FULL COMPATIBILITY WITH THE INDUSTRY STANDARD.

COMPAQ SAID THAT ALONG WITH ITS 16 MHZ 386 SPEED, THE COMPAQ DESKPRO 386 OFFERS FEATURES INCLUDING UP TO 130 MEGABYTES OF FIXED DISK STORAGE WITH AVERAGE ACCESS TIMES OF 19 MILLISECONDS, UP TO 40 MEGABYTES OF FIXED DISK BACKUP, WHICH PROVIDES FOUR TIMES THE CAPACITY AND TWICE THE SPEED OF THE COMPANY'S PREVIOUS FIXED DISK DRIVE BACKUP SYSTEM, AND UP TO 14 MEGABYTES OF RAM.

THE COMPANY ALSO SAID IT INTRODUCED, FOR THE COMPAQ DESKPRO 386, THE COMPAQ COLOR MONITOR AND COMPAQ ENHANCED COLOR GRAPHICS BOARD. BOTH PRODUCTS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH THE MOST POPULAR SOFTWARE DESIGNED FOR THE IBM ENHANCED GRAPHICS ADAPTER, COMPAQ SAID.

THE COMPANY SAID SHIPMENTS OF THE NEW PERSONAL COMPUTERS ALREADY HAVE BEGUN TO U.S. AND CANADIAN AUTHORIZED COMPAQ DEALERS. SHIPMENTS TO EUROPEAN AND AUSTRALIAN DEALERS ARE SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN OCTOBER, COMPAQ SAID.
