AT&T Introduces A Personal Computer Compatible With The IBM PC AT

Morristown, N.J. -- February 17, 1987 -- PRNewswire -- AT&T today introduced a new personal computer compatible with most of the hardware and software programs offered for the IBM PC AT, but offering additional features and flexibility.

Called the AT&T PC 6310, the new PC is competitively priced with other AT-compatible PCs, uses the powerful Intel(A) 80286 processor, and is aimed at the MS(B)-DOS/PC-DOS(C) workstation market. All models will be sold through AT&T authorized retail and value added resellers, and the AT&T sales force. The PC 6310 (as well as the AT&T PC 6300 PLUS) is covered under AT&T's one-year, on-site warranty. AT&T is the industry leader in providing a full year of warranty service on the buyer's site.

The AT&T PC 6310, which will be manufactured by Ing C. Olivetti & C., S.p.A. in Italy, is compatible with virtually all peripherals and MS-DOS/PC-DOS applications software written for the IBM PC AT. The PC 6310 is equipped with 512 kB of Random Access Memory (RAM), but is easily expandable to 7 MB.

"The addition of the PC 6310 to our line of PCs rounds out our family of workstations," said Vittorio Cassoni, senior vice president of AT&T's data systems division. "And combined with our other data equipment, our expertise in data networking, our superior connectivity on the premise and beyond, we offer business customers a total solution to their data communications needs."

The AT&T PC 6310 is available in 20, 40 and 68 MB hard disk versions with a 1.2 MB floppy disk drive. The PC 6310 also has space for a third drive, and up to 80 MB of storage -- capabilities high-power DOS users have been asking for. There is plenty of power in the PC 6310 for large spreadsheets, data bases and other demanding applications because of its speed, memory and storage capacity.

Similar to other AT&T PC's, the PC 6310 has high-resolution graphics (640 X 400 pixels) and a wide range of networking capabilities. It can readily link with co-workers' computers and outside information sources including:

-- the economical AT&T STARLAN local area network;

-- up to four RS232C serial connectors;

-- Systems Network Architecture/Binary Synchronous Communication (SNA/BSC) and other terminal emulation software and hardware.

The first AT&T PC using the 80286 CPU was the PC 6300 PLUS, introduced in October 1985. It provides DOS users with high power, and also offers the option to run the UNIX(R) System V operating system simultaneously with DOS. Superior communications and the multitasking UNIX operating system give PC 6300 PLUS users capabilities difficult or in some cases even impossible to attain in MS-DOS or other 80286 PCs.

With the addition of the newest member of the 80286 family, DOS power users can choose the PC 6310 when PC AT compatibility is required and excellent price/performance and maximum speed and storage are desired. The PC 6300 PLUS is for users who want XT compatibility but AT performance with the option to simultaneously manage a variety of tasks while still getting the high speed and storage of MS-DOS applications. Both PCs use much of the same AT&T hardware and software.

"A number of PC standards have been established in the business marketplace, and we intend to be fully compatible with them," said Cassoni.

The PC 6310 is expected to be generally available in the first quarter of this year. Prices are:
