Dell Accelerates Next Generation Product Development

Top Specialist From IBM'S Advanced Workstations Division Joins Dell

AUSTIN, Texas, May 10, 1989 -- PRNewswire -- Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) today announced the appointment of 14-year IBM veteran Charles Sauer to the position of director of product planning, continuing Dell's organizational realignment designed to focus on the company's advanced products' development and strategy.

Before joining Dell, Sauer held a number of key product and engineering management positions at IBM. Most recently, he was a senior technical staff member with IBM's Advanced Workstations Division, where he worked on IBM's implementation of the UNIX operating system, AIX, and its advanced distributed systems architecture. Prior to that position, Sauer was manager of systems architecture with the Advanced System Products Group, focusing on the RT PC software/system architecture definition. Sauer was previously a research staff member /manager at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center.

As part of its push into advanced systems, Dell recently announced a family of UNIX-based systems for multi-user applications. Commenting on Dell's high-end strategy, Henry said, "Our intention is to develop an expandable product line that seamlessly brings to the desktop the industry's broadest performance spectrum, including multi-processing technology with mainframe performance."

According to Henry, Dell systems are increasingly used in high-end applications powered by Dell's family of '386 personal computers, including local area network file servers, relational database management and CAD, among others.
