The International Business Machines Corporation formally introduced its new OS-2 Warp operating system yesterday in the company's latest attempt to catch up to the Microsoft Corporation's Windows program, currently the top software for personal computers.

I.B.M. said the system was faster than Windows and contained a variety of applications. But analysts said I.B.M.'s software was not a threat to Microsoft's hold on the market.

Several companies, including the Toshiba Corporation and the Dell Computer Corporation, said yesterday that they would offer software for OS-2 Warp. But analysts said I.B.M. would need an enormous advertising campaign to attract more software developers and consumers.
