PROTON _#10 Allan Gottlieb Intel meeting March 82 Comments on our meeting with Intel. (I had to leave at 4PM for my class so I am ignorant of anything discussed during the last 45 minutes.) (1) I was favorably impressed with the intel technical person who came (the one who did all the talking). He seemed genuinely interested in hearing about our project, was very quick to grasp what was going on, and seemed quite honest in his evaluation of our fit with intel and motorola products. (2) I felt that the meeting was conducted in businesslike and productive manner. Both sides asked the relevant questions and everyone listened to the answers given. (Maybe I should invite the intel rep to chair our monday and thursday meetings as well.) (3) The substantive issue x86 vs 68x (my god there palindromes!) -- It appears to me that three questions remain to be answered: (a) Does the address space flattening proposal really work (I think so) and is the overhead acceptable (allowing for the intel's basic speed advantage)? (b) Is a portable OS (i.e. UNIX) available with source for the intel -- an OS that supports the flattened address space? (c) Will the 68030 (sp?) give us 32 address bits outside the chip (i.e. can we attach > 16MB in a straightfoward manner)? If the answers are Yes Yes No, then we have a difficult decision. If not, I would think that the motorola is to be favored.
