Digital Equipment Corporation and IBM are providing nearly $50 million worth of equipment, software, research grants, and on campus personnel. Phase One of the project involves installation of several hundred VAX class machines, associated graphics devices, and of a campus network. All machines will be running 4.2bsd Unix (tm). Phase two of Project Athena will see the installation of several thousand more computers with high quality graphics displays.
