I heard that DEC announced a new, high-performance UNIX workstation based
on a MIPS chip. I haven't heard anything about availability dates; does
anyone know?

About its UNIX implementation, will it be ULTRIX or AT&T System V with
BSD 4.3, or what?

Thank you,
Wayne Scott

DECstation 5000 Model 200CX (color frame buffer) shipping this week.

DECstation 5000 Model 200PX (2D accelerator) shipping early May.

3D versions shipping this summer.

I believe the DECsystem 5000 Model 200 goes out this week as well.
(server machine).

Dunno what we are quoting on delivery dates right now, however;
depends I'm sure on when you place an order :-).

Ultrix.

Somebody said that the DEC{system, station} 5000 (which you may also
hear referred to as the 3max by some DEC employees) would be shipping
with Ultrix 4.0. This is not the case - Ultrix 4.0 is not yet
shipping. If you get a DECstation 5000 in the near future, it will
come with Ultrix 3.1D, which is a child release following in the
footsteps of the 3.1C release for the DECstation 5400.

It is my understanding that the first 3maxes were scheduled to ship
the day of the announcement, although consulting with your salesbeing
would be a good plan - I'm just a lowly systems wizard, and know
nothing of the ways of salespeople.

Very slight clarification to the ULTRIX version supporting the DECstation
5000 and DECsystem 5000 (the new machines).

The code supporting the DECstation 5000 at First Customer Ship is ULTRIX
Worksystems Software (UWS) V2.2d. The code supporting the timesharing/server
system (DECsystem 5000) is ULTRIX-32 V3.1d. These versions also support
all previous RISC boxes (DECstation 3100, 2100 and DECsystem 3100, 5400, 58XX).
This code started shipping with the new hardware (April 6th).

Version V4.0 (where UWS and ULTRIX finally have the same version number)
releases in the June timeframe, but will not be the first version to
support the new machines. We simply announced it on the same day as we
announced the machines.
