Announcing the brand new X386 SYSTEM V/386 X11R4 server. I'm happy to announce my newest big hack: X386 -- a server for SUPER VGA that uses 256 colors at up to 1152x900 pixels. Along with the COMPLETE sources you can get a binary version including all that MIT X11R4 stuff (plus *little* extensions): Xserver.tar.Z The sources and patches neccessary to build the whole core MIT/X11R4 release. This will require over 80MBytes free disk space. X11R4bin.tar.Z All binaries, fonts, etc. that are needed to get X11R4 run on your 386box. (ca. 8MBytes) X11R4lib.tar.Z The toolkits all 'real programmers' use to like, if they want to write X - applications. (ca. 4 MBytes) 75dpi.tar.Z Some fonts which you should both install to get a full X11R4 100dpi.tar.Z feelin. (ca. 3MBytes each) That means, if you want to install all you need around 18MBytes free disk space. It's fast, It's free, It's X386 ! REQUIREMENTS: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X386 will run on following Unix operating systems: Interactive 386/ix, 2.0.2 or later SCO Unix (planned) ESIX (planned) You must have installed the STREAMS facility and optional TCP/IP. (NOTE: TCP/IP is NOT supported by this binary release, but the sources do) A lot of RAM !!! 4MBytes seem to be the absolute minimum. 8MBytes is strongly recommended. VGA boards with the following chipsets are supported: PVGA1A / PVGA1B (not running correct at this time) ET3000 (for ex. GENOA 5300/5400) ET4000 (STB PWR Graph, Sigma Legend, etc.) Mice that support one of the following communication standards: Microsoft serial (Microsoft, various NoName ...) Mouse Systems serial (Mouse Systems, Logitech ...) Mircosoft Busmouse FEATURES: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- o Fastest X11R4 server for SUPER VGA in 256 colors o AT&T STREAMS and TCP/IP o REAL portable shared libs (libX11, libXt, libXmu, libXaw & libXext !!!) o The very first VGA server that is FULLY configurable. (see /usr/lib/X11/config/X386/Xconfig) o Virtual terminal switching. o Multible servers on different virtual terminals running at the same time. o Full use of installed video RAM through the concept of a virtual screen. (also called panning) o Switching between different display resolution by keypress. o Online Manpages, along with xman, an X - application for online manual browsing. o Many usefull clients besides the normal core mit clients. NOTES: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- o I will not port this server to ESIX or SCO UNIX. That should do someone of YOU !!! (I don't have access to these OS) o I will not write a driver for your VGA board that is not supported now, unless I have the data-book of this specific chipset and the same VGA in my 386box to test the driver. If you want to write the driver by your own, please contact me first, so that I can give you hints and further information. o I'm not responsible that everything runs correctly. If some of the core mit clients has a misbehaviour, contact me and I will see, if I can fix the bug. o There are no version numbers for the releases. The date that is mentioned in this document is the reference to distinguish the various versions. RELEASE 08Nov90 o This server may be added to commerical products. But it would be nice that the company then gives me a little acknowledgement for my work. I didn't get any money for programming this server. If SCO would like to use this server in one of their products they have to pay $100 for every copy they redistribute, cause I don't like this company and their braindamaged products. o The server is now stable, but far from being real finished. If someone donates me a 8514/A or TIGA graphics board, I'd like to add support for these to X386. o Cause I'm not a native english speaking person, and I don't like writing documentations for my things, perhaps someone of you would like to expand the current doc's. o For questions, you can reach me via e-mail.
