[Canberrauav] FW: Share and learn more about UAVs Stephen Dade stephen_dade at hotmail.com Tue May 28 02:30:43 UTC 2013 Hi Rex, Most of our work is done via the CanberraUAV mailing list (cc'd) which you are welcome to join in (see http://www.canberrauav.com/mailman/listinfo/canberrauav) Our meetups are sporadic at best. There's usually a few of us at the CMAC field on Sunday mornings. Otherwise we're regularly attend the MHV maker meetups (http://www.makehackvoid.com/community/meetings) on the 1st/3rd/5th Tuesday evening of each month. Thanks Stephen ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Lindsey Rex Sagge < lrsagge at gmail.com> Date: 27 May 2013 08:12 Subject: Share and learn more about UAVs To: canberraUAV at gmail.com Hi Guys, I came across your website and I am proud of your achievement. It feels great that your group is open to UAV enthusiasts. I am LTCOL REX SAGGE PN(M), I am an active Philippine Marine Corps officer who happens to be in Australia every other month because my wife and my 2 kids lives in Queanbeyan. I completed my masters degree in C4ISR-Electronic Warfare in UNSW at ADFA. I have been involved in successful military UAV operations against terrorists when I was with the Intelligence Service since 2000 with US, Israeli and locally-developed UAVs, such as Scan Eagle, GNAT-1 (the smaller brother of the Predator), Blue horizon (Israel), Raven, Hawk-Eye, etc. I am currently the Vice-Chairman of the Technical Working Group for UAV development for the Armed Forces of the Philippines. I am a member of AUVSI and attends the annual Unmanned Systems North America. Inasmuch as I am into military UAVs, I am just glad that the civilian UAV is gaining grounds and this means that we can develop more UAVs, cheaper and better, to save more lives. I have been using expensive UAVs and I also want to learn more about the ArduPilot and how you use it. I guess this would make my life easier in pushing for affordable UAVs. I have some cool ideas on how you can deliver the 500ml water bottle accurately, since I am also developing or integrating systems for precision delivery of grenades. So, can I join you and catch up with you guys? I'll be in Queanbeyan until Monday next week. Here's some video of the military UAVs that we developed. Kind regards, Rex

[Canberrauav] FW: Share and learn more about UAVs Stephen Dade stephen_dade at hotmail.com Tue May 28 03:24:17 UTC 2013 Hi Adam, CanberraUAV is purely based in the civilian arena, developing technologies for Search & Rescue UAV (among other civilian uses). We do not involve ourselves in the military UAV sector. Quite conversely, we want to show that UAV's can be used for good. The email was received by the canberrauav at gmail.com address. It is our policy to redirect any "general interest" or requests for assistance via our mailing list, so that if anyone else has a similar question, they can just search the list. -Stephen > Date: Tue, 28 May 2013 13:05:12 +1000 > Subject: Re: [Canberrauav] FW: Share and learn more about UAVs > From: adam.lloyd at gmail.com > To: stephen_dade at hotmail.com > CC: canberrauav at canberrauav.com; lrsagge at gmail.com > > I am lost for words here. [Canberrauav] FW: Share and learn more about UAVs Chris Gough christopher.d.gough at gmail.com Tue May 28 07:20:19 UTC 2013 re infographic: <gallows_humour> It seems at least practice is improving their aim. </gallows_humour> Ethics are important, thank you Adam for bringing the discussion out into the open. FWIW here's my opinion. I find the thought of engaging with military UAV people confronting, but on balance I think we should make Rex feel very welcome. These are my reasons: 1) It's a test of our GPL credentials, it's not our place to try and restrict how GPL code is used. 2) Welcoming Rex to participate in our humanitarian work is not contributing to weapons development. He obviously doesn't need our help for that. 3) I am sure interested military organisations are already competently following. Yes you, Hello :) 4) Almost all aerospace tech has crossed over from military to civilian domain, it's arrogant to pretend otherwise. 5) I'm sure there is a lot we can learn from him, which will advance the art of saving lives. 6) statistically he's probably a nice person, most people are. I think there is a clear line, I trust myself not to cross it. Reiterating Stephen's point (which I think is abundantly clear on our web site, etc): We don't make weapons. But the fact is we do make "dual-use goods" (in the Defence Department jargon sense of the word, civilian non-military items with the potential to be re-purposed as weapons, such as bulk quantities of fertiliser, SAR UAVs and many other types of thing). Pretending they are not potentially dangerous doesn't make anyone safer. Advancing our art does. I'm willing to have my mind changed by counter-arguments, and don't object to anyone disagreeing with me. Please do express your opinions, a taboo on this topic would be counter-productive. [Canberrauav] FW: Share and learn more about UAVs Andrew Tridgell tridge at samba.org Fri May 31 05:43:41 UTC 2013 Hi Chris, I agree with your comments, and I don't think we should avoid working with people because they have military connections, but we should also make it very clear that we don't want our code to be used for military systems. Rex dropped past my house on Wednesday afternoon for a chat. He brought with him a SkyWalker that he'd bought from www.event38.com. I explained to him that we don't want to help with any military use of APM or our code, and he accepted that. He is still interested in using his SkyWalker for FPV and civilian aerial mapping. Cheers, Tridge
