New VMware for Linux Release Now Available

VMware 1.1 for Linux provides important new features, closing the gap between physical and virtual machines

Palo Alto, Calif., October 11, 1999 - VMware Inc. , the leading provider of virtual machine applications for PCs, today announced the release of VMware 1.1 for Linux, the newest version of VMware virtual machine technology for Linux users. VMware will debut the new product at the Atlanta Linux Showcase (booth number 201) from October 12th through 16th.

This release follows closely on the heels of the company's launch of VMware for Windows NT and Windows 2000 in September. Since launching the original VMware 1.0 for Linux in May, more than 180,000 users have registered on the company's website to evaluate and/or purchase the product. The company's customer base includes developers, quality assurance and technical support engineers, as well as Linux users who want access to Windows applications. Linux users have responded enthusiastically to the new release.

The most important new feature of VMware 1.1 for Linux is the addition of Windows 2000 as a supported guest operating system. This enables customers to evaluate Windows 2000 capabilities and to run early Windows 2000 applications on Linux desktops. The new version also maximizes the use of virtual machines and more closely approximates the capabilities of a physical computer by supporting common peripheral devices, including scanners, printers, ZIP drives, and MP3 players. This allows Linux users to take advantage of many devices that are typically used with Microsoft Windows applications.

VMware 1.1 for Linux is the first update to the original VMware 1.0 for Linux. All existing VMware for Linux customers will receive version 1.1 as a free upgrade.
