Summary: yabba compressor - why not on prep ? Keywords: yabba Message-ID: <hfaester.690044596@Physik.TU-Muenchen.DE> Date: 13 Nov 91 15:03:16 GMT Sender: n...@Informatik.TU-Muenchen.DE (News System) Organization: Technische Universitaet Muenchen, Germany Lines: 23 Hi there, I'm not sure if this is the correct newsgroup but anyways: In the GNUs Bulletin from June 91 I read from yabba replacing compress for GNU software in the future. What I don't understand is, why is yabba not available on prep.ai.mit.edu in the directory pub/gnu ? It's not that I didn't find yabba elsewhere like on sun.soe.clarkson.edu but I think if the FSF announces that they will switch to another compression program it would be a good idea to put this program on the machine where GNU software is available first so that people can try this new compression (sorry for this monster of words but I'm german :)) ). Just a question/suggestion from someone who has yabba installed even if I hardly use it :) Hannes -- Hannes Faestermann | Internet: Physik-Department E17 | Hannes.Faesterm...@Physik.TU-Muenchen.DE TU Muenchen, | 8046 Garching, West Germany | BitNET : HF@DGABLG5P

Heh, the future isn't here yet, so why the hubba? ;-} The new compression program will be announced and placed on prep.ai.mit.edu, when we are ready to do the switch. RMS announced a month or two ago that about a week before the FSF was planning to release the yabba-based compression program, a patent on its algorithm was announced. -- David J. This is, to my knowledge, false. No patents currently cover Y coding or anything else used by my yabba program. (Possible exception: I did unroll some loops, and rumor has it that IBM patented unrolling in 1986. I *hope* this rumor is false.) The recent Gibson-Graybill patent appears to cover some of Ross Williams' LZRW algorithms, which GNU was looking at along with yabba as possible replacements for compress. ---Dan
