From traffic here and private mail I have received it seems this idea of a
Linux box being able to share disc and printers to DOS workstations is
quite popular. I am sure that my original suggestion (LAN Manager) wasn't
  nearly general enough.

It seems to me that we wouldn't really want to make a Linux hosted DOS
file server into a clone of any of Netware, Vines or Lan Manager. Rather,
we would want to get Linux able to talk the same protocols as clients of
all these, in a similar way to a LAN Manager server talking IPX to netware
clients, or a Unix box talking appletalk to Apples using cap, etc.

That is, I we would need to find or design some sort of generic
framework within which other protocols could be supported, in order that
there would be as few clashes as possible. In the DOS world, for instance,
there is the NDIS specification, and a competitor to it from Novell.

Next question then: what specifications exist for the support of multiple
  protocol stacks under Unix?

There is no standard specification that I am aware of. STREAMS
allows multiplexors, but there is no standard programming interface.
On SCO Unix, the protocol stack opens the Ethernet device, and uses a
STREAMS message to ask for the protocol's packet types. BSD Unix has
another method for accessing raw Ethernet packets.

Linux's Ethernet interface is only available to kernel-linked
modules, although I believe Ross plans to change that. It already
supports multiple protocols, and even delivery of the same packet to
multiple stacks (very useful for monitoring TCP/IP traffic).

I'm going to be revising the interface to the Ethernet boards, so
anyone looking at user-mode Ethernet interfaces should stay in touch.

Crynwr Software Crynwr Software sells packet driver support.

Since there is no particular Unix standard to comply with, why cook up yet
another? Would it not be feasible to copy to some large extent one of the
DOS standards? I suggest DOS because they are well-known and documented.
Maybe it could be done in such a way that it would be portable to some
extent too, for whatever its worth.
