Does anyone know if there exists a shareware or freeware version of Emacs for
the Macintosh? And if so, where can it be FTP'd? Please reply via e-mail.
I will summarize to the newsgroup in a week. Thanks.

The FSF does not support Emacs (or anything) on the Macintosh.
This is because of Apple's look and feel lawsuit.

Apple is trying to clamp a monopoly on developing window systems.
This threatens the freedom of all programmers.

For this reason the League for Programming Freedom suggests
programmers not develop software for Apple machines, or port software
to Apple machines. This includes free software, commercial software,
whatever. Developing software for Apple machines gives Apple crucial
help, and it is self-defeating to help an active and threatening
enemy.

(The League for Programming Freedom is not affiliated with the GNU
project and does not advocate free software. It is an organization
which aims to protect programmers' freedom to write programs. I
helped to found it, but I am not in charge of it. For more info,
contact l...@uunet.uu.net.)

If you care about your freedom to write software, it makes sense for
you to take that advice. By simply *not doing* certain work, and
doing something else instead, you can avoid feeding the lawyers that
bite you.

(Last summer, rumors started that Apple had lost the lawsuit.
Unfortunately, this was an exaggeration. The rumors have a kernel of
truth: a ruling on certain issues went mostly against Apple. It is
possible, but not certain, that this will lead to Apple's eventual
defeat--if it is not overturned on appeal. No one knows what the
final outcome will be.)

The FSF set up the newsgroups gnu.* as part of the GNU project.
They are repeaters for our mailing lists, and the same policies
apply to them as apply to the mailing lists.

All I'll say about the content of your message is that wrongdoers
often try to excuse themselves by arguing we should not hold them
responsible for their own actions. To say that everyone in the world
must be blamed equally much or little is to ignore the capacity of
people, including the officers of corporations, to have a conscience
and act on it. For those who want people to cultivate their
consciences, such a position is self-defeating.

You don't have to agree with our policy. If you wish to argue against
it, please use the proper newsgroup/mailing list, *not* gnu.emacs.help.
The proper group is gnu.misc.discuss.
