In Chapter 5 : Emacs as a Work Environment, at page 122-123 the method to start-up a shell in emacs is to use M-x shell. After I do this the shell prompt comes on, but when I type a command and hit return nothing happens. Obviously I am missing something very basic, I guess. How do you execute commands from a shell within emacs? (In fact the discription following the command on pages 122-123 are kind of confusing) amit

If you buy an O'Riley manual, that does nothing to help support further development of Emacs or its free documentation.

When I ask people to support the FSF, I am appealing to the wish to work together for the long-term good of all. Not everyone shares this basic value. The standard American business ideology says that it is legitimate for people to be totally selfish, and in a short-term fashion to boot. Since there's no way to prove or disprove basic moral axioms, I address my appeals to whoever shares the idea that voluntary cooperation is a good thing. I hope you and most people still share this value at least to some extent. One kind of cooperation that we especially need is for users to report bugs, including manual bugs. Making the Emacs manual accurate and complete is your job as well as ours: we can't fix the problem unless you report it. We can't do the job alone. It sounds like you encountered a problem some time ago and have just mentioned it now. Thanks for reporting it, but in the future, could you possibly report any problems as soon as you encounter them? The sooner we get a report, the sooner we can fix the problem. Also, I'm not quite certain what this problem is. Could you possibly send a bug report with more details? Please read the Bugs chapter of the latest (version 19) Emacs manual, which is much expanded over the chapter in the old edition, and follow its guidelines. They explain what information to include to make sure the Emacs maintainers can see what the problem is.

The idea is to have copies on sale at Usenix. You can also order them. (Of course, now is when you will all find and report lots of errors in the manual, and I'll just have to go flagellate myself in helpless frustration. But please do report them, so we can improve the next edition.)
