I need it for a SMB project I am doing which requires some remote file server connectivity with an NT server. Also, I would like to know, is it any licensing issue involves in having my little product use NT or WIN95 or Workgroup for windows as a file server for my product for storing few files. If yes, where can I find more info on the subject. Please, any help or hint in this area is highly appreciated. Thanks, Ephi. My email address: e...@infoserv.com Fax: (408) 654-0501.

It's GPL'd rather than public domain so it may not be as free as you want. >Also, I would like to know, is it any licensing issue involves >in having my little product use NT or WIN95 or Workgroup for windows >as a file server for my product for storing few files. If its an issue SAMBA is a high quality free(GPL) SMB over TCP/IP over for Linux and Unix systems. I've got a network of Windows 3.1 machines running Windows for Workgroups and PCTCP. I have a Sparc 20 (Solaris 2.3) running Samba. Because my Samba can't speak NetBEUI, it can't serve the WFWG machines. Can Samba speak NetBEUI yet? Will it ever be able to? An alternative is to use Microsoft's TCP/IP stack, but it's incompatible with the applications we need -- so it's worthless. If Samba can't speak NetBEUI, is there some way to get Windowz to speak The WFWG protocol over TCP/IP via PCTCP? I also have access to OnNet (the successor to PCTCP) and so far I haven't found a way to get OnNet to do this, either.. Suggestions are welcome! James -- James W. Just a reiteration of the problem. As far as I know, Netbeui support isn't being worked on for samba on any Unix platform. (I'd love it if it was...) So, the current alternatives are the two TCP/IP stacks from microsoft. The TCP/IP 16 stack just plain sucks. It takes up way too much dos memory and doesn't give me enough room to open any apps in windows that need a winsock interface. The TCP/IP 32 stack works great but leaves out the DOS side support (except for DOS shells...) And I've heard that the Microsoft TCP/IP stack is the ONLY one that supports NetBios over TCP/IP. (Which means that it's the only TCP/IP stack that will work with Samba) So... Netbeui support would be great! Or even IPX with NetBios support. I originally thought that the IPX route may be fairly easy to implement on a Linux machine, since the kernel has some IPX support built in. But... I don't have the time to investigate.. :( Anyone interested in pursuing this? Shane Anderson (sh...@nve.com)

I believe the Linux kernel has all the support needed for Samba over IPX, someone just has to figure the protocol over the IPX and implement it. For netbeui you'll just have to wait and see.
