At any rate, mall security, under the alleged guidance of the United States Secret Service, decided to bust up the meeting and confiscate equipment. My understanding is that one of the attendees was none other than the somewhat infamous "Knight Lightning," who is currently working for the EFF Washington office as an intern while he goes to law school. I was wondering if the EFF plans to take any action on behalf of the "hackers" who were there. Mike Lastort

Thanks for the post on the 2600 mall raid. EFF has been working on the case for the past month now, pulling together the "real" story by talking to the people involved. Since we have determined that the case does seem to involve some civil liberties violations, we are working with CPSR and the Virginia ACLU to find a good civil liberties attorney to litigate it for us. Several of the attendees have expressed an interest in being plaintiffs if a lawsuit is brought. Incidently, CPSR has already filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests on behalf of several of the attendees to learn more of the facts. As far as "Knight Lightning" is concerned, he did attend the meeting but was not involved in the raid itself. Although he is still involved with EFF, KL has moved on and is working as a tech writer and is applying to law schools this year. Shari Shari Steele, Staff Attorney, Electronic Frontier Foundation
