They actively lobbied for the passage of the DMCA and they are supporting its continuation and opposing its amendment or repeal. On Tuesday, they released the following statement: QUOTE: >Subject: RE: Arrest of Dimitri Sklyarov >Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 14:32:54 -0400 >From: Amy Gwiazdowski <amyg@publishers.org> >To: "'Andrew Lawrence'" <ausage@smoke-and-mirrors.net> >Dear Mr. Lawrence: >AAP stands by its press release of July 22 supporting the anticircumvention >provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and commending the >Department of Justice for acting on its responsibility to enforce the DMCA >in the matter of Dmitry Sklyarov. >In response to those who attempt to justify circumventing, or trafficking in >devices that circumvent, encryption and other technological measures that >protect copyright in the digital environment, AAP urges them to carefully >consider how their arguments would apply to precisely the same activities in >connection with encryption and other technological measures used to protect >privacy in that same environment. >Amy Gwiazdowski >AAP ENDQUOTE someone who has MUCH better writing skills than I replied at: http://freesklyarov.org/letters/010725-youll.html with a REALLY good summation of all that is wrong with the DMCA. Finally, here is what Congress is thinking about all of this: http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,45522,00.html They're LAUGHING at us!!! Here is Adobe's stock price today: http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=adbe&d=v1 No such thing as bad publicity, folks! Now, they roll out a puppet, Rick Boucher (D-VA): http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,45548,00.html In other words, "Let's not make this a test case. It's weak and they might use it to overturn the DMCA or defeat our boys in DoJ and the FBI!" Meanwhile: Adobe (who could have opposed Dmitry's entrance into the country, rather than lobby for his arrest) continues to climeb on the stock market. They're throwing a party for one of their executives as we speak here! Ashcroft has announced the creation of 9 more units to duplicate the one in San Jose, to continue to enforce these rules and illegal laws. The EFF and other sites continue to use this to bolster donations and membership. ...and a young Russian man, with a 3-month old baby daughter, continues to rot in a holding cell in Las Vegas, fully 9 days after his illegal arrest and detention...with a public defender as his only advocate in a foreign land. Where is the money GOING???? The money we gave to EFF, the various sites via PayPal (I gave $100 and volunteered my lawyer)...I have heard nothing). ...and the laughter and snickers continue in Washington, San Jose and on Wall Street.
