Yahoo! Enhances Search and Directory Capabilities
Integration of Google's Advanced Search Technology Completed
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- July 10, 2000 -- Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO), a global Internet
communications, commerce and media company, today announced the latest round of
enhancements to the popular Yahoo!® Search and Directory (www.yahoo.com). New features,
including Inside Yahoo! and Most Popular Sites, along with upgraded search technology,
now give Yahoo! users more relevant and accurate information even faster. With the
integration of Google's complementary search engine technology now complete, Yahoo!
continues to offer the best place online to find anything on the Web.
"Yahoo! strives to provide our users with the best search technology in order
to deliver relevant information faster," said Srinija Srinivasan, vice president
and editor-in-chief, Yahoo! Inc. "Yahoo!'s new features, advanced search technology,
and complete integration of Google's search engine provide Yahoo! users with the
most comprehensive and accurate search results on the Web."
Yahoo! Search and Directory enhancements include:
- Inside Yahoo! - The Inside Yahoo! feature gives users direct access to relevant
information within the global Yahoo! network. Links to Yahoo! properties, such
as Yahoo! Classifieds, Yahoo! Finance, and Yahoo! Clubs, provide information
related to each individual search and allow users to benefit from Yahoo!'s wide
array of information and services.
- Most Popular Sites - The Most Popular Sites feature provides Yahoo! users
a list of commonly accessed sites on the Web. The listed sites, determined by
algorithms, complement the editorial listings of the Yahoo! Directory and give
users a way to focus on Web sites that stand out in terms of their popularity.
- Reorganization of Commercial Listings - Recognizing the growth of business-to-business
sites on the Web, the Yahoo! Directory has incorporated improved categorization
of sites formerly listed under "Companies" in the "Business and Economy" category.
The "Companies" area has been split into two sections: the new "Business-to-Business"
path allows industry-based Yahoo! users to browse categories and sites that
are relevant to their business needs, while the new "Shopping and Services"
category allows consumers to easily find sites offering goods and services aimed
at the end user.
- Upgraded Search Technology - Yahoo! has upgraded the search technology for
its own content, making it easier and faster for users to find what they need
in the Yahoo! Directory and for specific areas within the Yahoo! network. Users
can perform customized searches on specific Yahoo! properties that allow for
more focused search results, including Yahoo! Shopping, Yahoo! Auctions, Yahoo!
Member Profiles and Yahooligans!.
- Google Integration - The integration of Google as Yahoo!'s default Web search
engine has been completed. Google is widely recognized for its award-winning
advanced search services, which use powerful technologies to determine the importance
and relevance of Web pages, while delivering rapid results. Google's technology
serves as a complement to Yahoo!'s popular Web directory and navigational guide.
In addition to the United States, Yahoo! has integrated Google's technology
into many of its World properties, including Yahoo! Canada, Yahoo! France and
Yahoo! Brazil.
