MedAbiliti Provides a Better Way to Implement Electronic Medical Record Technology

New York, NY, October 14, 2003

Recent trends in the medical community toward creating electronic medical record systems have shown the benefits of such technology. However, the process of conversion often seems daunting both in terms of the costs to replace existing systems and the time spent training key personnel in the new software. A new technology solution from MedAbiliti Software Inc. now provides the benefits of digital medical records while mitigating the costs and training time.

"It is a misconception that moving your medical records to a distributed, digital system requires replacing your existing systems," says Nicolas Richards, CEO of MedAbiliti Software, Inc. "Most vendors advocate replacing existing investments with brand new technology because that's the only method they know. But you do have a choice now. We've solved the interoperability issues. With MedAbiliti's more cost-effective, less-intrusive solution, MDMR, you can just add pieces to what you already have in place. Keep what you already have, if it works well for your needs. Let MDMR add what is missing to create fully secure, digital, distributed medical records in a timely and cost-effective manner."

MedAbiliti last week announced its groundbreaking MedAbiliti Distributed Medical Record (MDMR). MDMR technology collects existing medical data from health care information systems, converts that data into XML, and provides tools and a user interface to integrate the data and apply security and privacy policies to it, down to individual data fields. The end result is a repository of XML data on an MDMR server, so authorized users (caregivers, health care payers, and patients) can easily retrieve patient data residing in multiple data storage sites on a virtual central data mode.

"The key fact about MDMR," says MedAbiliti's Chairman, Edward Meinert, "is that you can keep your existing medical data systems while adding the distributed framework MDMR provides. The work of translating your old data formats into XML is done by MDMR. Your company gets a completely integrated system that can deliver medical data on the web in a secure fashion. The front end systems that your users are familiar with can remain the same while changes are made on the back end to allow interoperability."

XML (Extensible Markup Language) improves the functionality of the web by providing more flexible and adaptable information identification, offering a standardized way for different systems to be able to communicate.

"One key problem with earlier efforts to create digital medical records was the interoperability issue," added Mr. Richards. "Other vendors advocate throwing everything out and starting over with their product. That adds costs and training issues, while throwing away your earlier investment. MDMR is a revolutionary approach to creating and managing medical records, and in conjunction with XML-enabled technology, is a solution that makes it an integrative, cost-saving, and security-conscious application."
