Not-so-artificial Intelligence

For his high school senior project, Mark E. Zuckerberg ’06 gave a little gift to the world’s MP3 addicts. As students at Phillips Exeter Academy, Zuckerberg and friend Adam D’Angelo created an MP3 player that would keep track of every song the user played on a computer and, as it learned what the user liked, would begin to make playlists.
Zuckerberg, a computer science concentrator, speaks humbly of this groundbreaking software, snazzily named “Synapse.” The way that the program figures out a person’s taste, Zuckerberg explains simply, is math. “There’s a screen you can look at where you can see the probabilities that it has calculated of you playing specific songs.”
According to his website (www.synapseai.com), “the Brain,” or the central intelligence of Synapse, is accurate to the hundredth of a percent.
The world took notice.
Seven months after its September 2002 release, the online technology newsgroup slashdot.org ran an article about the program. Almost immediately, Synapse was fending off calls from WinAmp, Windows Media player, Moodlogic and MusicMatch.
“One of the companies offered us $950,000 but wanted us to go work for them for 3 years,” Zuckerberg says. “We wanted to go to college, so we said no.”
Team Synapse began communicating with Microsoft, but Zuckerberg says they backed out when they began to suspect that the multi-billion dollar corporation was going to rip them off. To ensure that they weren’t going to be taken advantage of, Zuckerberg and D’Angelo split the $12,000 price of a patent, confident that their company’s future profits would pay off.
Though these days Zuckerberg has other projects on his “to do” list, the sophomore anticipates Synapse’s future success. He says he and D’Angelo are considering making Synapse open source, which, for the technologically illiterate, means that downloaders can see the program’s code and improve upon it. It is currently available for free download on the website. Zuckerberg’s software populism goes beyond simply turning down big-money corporate offers. “It’s important to us that people are able to use the software for free,” he preaches. “Software belongs to everyone. No matter what kind of deal we get into, we’re going to try to keep it free.”
