"...because I understand exactly what to do with Groklaw post-SCO."

You can't leave us hanging with that! You want a class-action suit for mental
cruelty?

I'm too tired to put it into words tonight, but basically we're on the
right track, with patents as the focus, and education about
licenses and the importance of the GPL. I didn't mean to make
it sound dramatic, but listening to everyone today talk about
patents, I see that Groklaw can play a role, if anyone ever does
bring a patent infringement lawsuit. I have to research some things
before I explain more, but in my mind, I know where to go next.

It's hard to overcome shyness alone. Maybe someone reading this at Linux world
can email you and arrange an introduction tomorrow. Then they could help
introduce you to folks you want to meet. It would be worth it for you and the
cause.

What kind of badge was worn? Anyone ever see any laptop made with ECC RAM, RAID 1 and LINUX?

February 16 2005

I got a number of badges from past Linux Worlds in NYC. Took the train in, so
didn't have to part a car. Easy to do. I could not make it to Boston, so
thanks for the report (someone has to sell a full length video of the floor
displays with the pitchmen telling what product they have and what it does, in
DVD chapter format, that could be selected from on a menu, so that those that
could not make the show could view all the products being sold there with a
features presentation to view option. And have a live web site set up so that
questions could be answered by clicking on a url on the presentation's software.
Prior art exists for this, but not on the scale it would have to be done with
to cover the entire floor at such a show.

PJ So, you got into the press room? So, you must have had a press badge? Do
the press badges have a name posted on it? If I remember correctly they put
names on badges and your company name on the regular badges, I think. So, I am
guessing that your badge did not have your name on it.

Thanks too for the report.

P.S. Anyone know of anyone ever creating a laptop with ECC memory and that also
has 2 hard drives that can be configured with Raid 0 or Raid 1? Also - none of
those little Mac Mini-like systems, like cappuccinoPC.com for Linux installs,
none of them have an ECC option. And the sales folks don't know why. In fact,
you can't buy ANY Apple desktop or laptop with ECC RAM at all, funny. For doing
accounting, when numbers are important, ECC matters. I have been told by sales
guys that the new memory is so good there are no errors, and after they are done
with their pitch, I then ask, if regular RAM is so darn good, then why was ECC
Ram invented, and why is it still manufactured, and why do most servers have ECC
RAM installed by default, and laptops don't? Isn't the workstation or the
Laptop where the numbers are crunched and NOT at the server? They don't have an
answer except to acknowledge that yes the other memory is inferior to the ECC
RAM. With all the accountants and number crunchers running around on
airplanes, with laptops, why is there not ONE laptop, made anywhere in the
worldwide, without the superior ECC RAM? NOt everyone is playing games with
these things. ECC RAM is important for important computing. They do make
laptops with two hard drives that can be configured with RAID 1 (from the
Motherboard, using hardware RAID (http://www.amazinglaptops.com/raid.htm indeed
has one for sale that has RAID 1 built in and it is not software raid, it is
configured thru hardware on the motherboard). Raid 1, when you are on the road
and have an important sales presentation or group presentation to do and your
hard drive crashes is WONDERFUL to have. Most of the time I am plugging a
laptop into a wall socket for power anyway. Just can't seem to find one that
also has ECC RAM. If you told an accountant what ECC RAM does vs the other
RAM, the accountant would buy ECC without a blink of an eye. They know they
must get it right so they will buy the rest. The first company that I see that
has ECC RAM, is the next laptop I buy.

The smallest footprint in a PC that has ECC, that I have seen to date, that can
do both RAID 1(SATA via hardware), is Shuttle computer's 925X based SB95P V2 ,
but it is too big for most travel and it does not have a built-in laptop screen.

Someone could build a travel PC that has ECC Ram and Raid 1 does not seem like
it is impossible (maybe too many marketing guys are in on the design and don't
have a clue as to how important ECC really is). The first to do it will have a
marketing coup that they can use to win the business of every accountant in the
world. Accuracy is that important.

I would say this that the quality of members research here would make this an
excellent place for finding prior art, that alone is valuable enought to ask for
this to continue after SCOXE.

PJ please read: The Introvert Advantage

by Bob Miller

February 16 2005

Introversion is nothing to be ashamed of. It is who we are and it has a big
role in defining what we like and dislike.

I strongly recommend the book, "The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in
an Extrovert World" by Marty Olsen Laney. According to Laney, the gene
responsible for introversion has been identified, and some of the brain
chemistry changes it causes have been mapped. So it's no more something to be
ashamed of than are blue eyes or male pattern baldness or any other genetically
determined trait.

If you understand and can predict your mental response to overstimulation (which
is what LinuxWorld was, though it was just right for an extrovert) you'll be
better able to pace yourself and accomplish things you want to. The book helped
me to do that, and I'm able to do a lot more now (and actually enjoying things
more often).

February 17 2005

I did request that I be allowed to be an anonymous as possible, so my badge
was not at all obvious who I was. I also kept it turned except when I needed
it for entry.

Yes, I see that too. But the details ... I need to figure that out.

Also, Linuxworld was all about business, and I understand better
now the business point of view, and I see a role for Groklaw in
making clear how to use the GPL correctly and comfortably in
the enterprise, the role of open source, its benefits. Fink's talk
was pivotal to me in getting clarity on that point of view.

I will read the book, and I thank you for the suggestion. Drained is
exactly the right word. It is exactly the feeling. It's not that I can't
force myself to do it -- part of my heritage is German, so I can
make myself do whatever I think I ought to -- but being around
strangers doesn't energize me. It wears me out.
