Linuxcare Pledges Commitment to Australian Open-Source Community Through Conference Sponsorship

SYDNEY, Australia, 9 Jan. 2001 -- Linuxcare, Inc., a leader in providing comprehensive professional services and solutions for Linux and open-source technologies, today announced its continued commitment to educate Linux specialists and users through major sponsorship of the Linux.Conf.Au conference.

The conference, to be held at the University of New South Wales 17-20 January, will bring together the diverse Linux community in Australia as well as experts from abroad to provide a forum for collaboration on new solutions and to further the development of Linux and open-source software in Australia. Convened jointly by Linux Australia and the Sydney Linux Users Group, Linux.Conf.Au will cover a variety of topics, including the Linux Standards Base, the rproxy project and cluster management.

Industry analysts predict tremendous growth in the Australian Linux market in the next five years. Linuxcare continues to invest in local open-source initiatives and assist Australian developers in acquiring the knowledge to take advantage of the strong market. As part of its ongoing participation in the open-source community, Linuxcare is sending six open-source experts, or "gurus" to the conference, to present on breakthrough projects that are currently pushing the boundaries of Linux. Linuxcare presenters include Paul "Rusty" Russell, developer and leader of the kernel packet "firewall" code and organiser of the first-ever Conference of Australian Linux Users in 1999, Andrew Tridgell, leader of the Samba project, and Martin Pool, lead developer of the rproxy project.

"Linuxcare's major sponsorship of Linux.Conf.Au is really indicative of its larger continued commitment to the open-source community both in Australia and elsewhere," said Anand Kumria of Linux Australia, which is organising Linux.Conf.Au. "As Australia's Linux market continues to grow, conferences like this contribute to its success. By offering the geographically distributed Linux community a forum where they can come together, exchange ideas and build Linux solutions, Linux Australia -- with the assistance of Linuxcare -- is helping to grow the open-source community dramatically."
