DVDs are encrypted to prevent unauthorized copying with a scheme that is supposedly an industry secret. Recently several international groups have figured out and published the algorithm and encryption keys, to the dismay of the industry. We will discuss the algorithm and the current state of the law prohibiting the circumvention of such mechanisms for protecting intellectual property. Other topics may include DVD technology in general, and other technological access-control measures.
