Novell Expands Customer Options for Open-Platform Computing at BrainShare Europe

BARCELONA, Spain (BrainShare® Europe 2003) — Sept. 8, 2003 — Novell today unveiled a series of solutions at its annual BrainShare Europe conference to help customers and partners take advantage of open-platform computing, providing powerful new ways for organizations to build, deploy, secure and manage business processes across multiplatform environments, including Linux. BrainShare Europe marks continued forward progress in Novell's delivering on its vision of one Net, a world without information boundaries.

"Novell has recently been in the news for our Linux strategy and our acquisition of Ximian, important steps in our commitment to offer business solutions for all the leading platforms on the market. Today's announcements prove our engineers have been hard at work turning this commitment into reality," said Jack Messman, chairman and CEO of Novell. "All the solutions we're announcing give customers new choices on how they can run their businesses better, take advantage of the Web, and secure their environments. No other vendor can match Novell in cross-platform support. We don't just talk about it - we're delivering it."

Reinforcing its commitment to the Linux space, Novell is opening for beta testing Novell® Nterprise™ Linux Services, a bundle of file, print, messaging, directory and management services in an integrated package for the Linux platform. Novell also announced the beta availability of Novell Nterprise Branch Office™ 2, a cross-platform-compatible soft appliance that lets organizations provide complete network services to their branch offices securely and inexpensively, without IT staff on site. Novell rolled out new solutions for secure Web services, starting with the upcoming beta version of Novell exteNd™ 5, a full-featured J2EE* development and deployment stack designed to help companies turn their existing business processes quickly and easily into Web services. Novell Nsure SecureLogin 3.5, an updated identity management solution that allows single sign-on across multiple platforms and the Web, gives customers new options for improving security and management of their diversified networks (see separate announcements).

Novell also outlined its decision to bring its independent software and hardware vendor partners into its PartnerNet® program, joining them with Novell's channel, integrator and training partners under a single banner to more effectively promote Novell's broad partner ecosystem. Novell's standards-based approach to both platform and development environments, and its strong presence in the open-source community through its recent acquisition of Ximian, make it an increasingly attractive option for developers (see separate announcement).

"In recent years, Novell hasn't been fertile ground for software and hardware companies looking to expand their markets. But we're determined to change that," said Chris Stone, vice chairman, office of the CEO of Novell. "We're building with, and to, open standards. We're putting our money where our mouth is on open source. And today, we're bringing ISV and IHV partners into our PartnerNet program, giving them new benefits and opportunities to leverage our software, our relationships and our other partners. We want to become the partner of choice for ISV/IHVs."

The 13th-annual BrainShare Europe event draws some 1,200 of Novell's top customers and partners from Europe, the Middle East and Africa for a week of technical and business sessions around Novell and partner solutions. With nearly 150 technical and business sessions, executive and partner keynotes, and the one Net solutions lab demonstrating the latest Novell and partner technologies, the event showcases Novell's expanding leadership in cross-platform services, Web application development, and secure identity management solutions.
