My CD-rom just arrive #3 August 2002 MVS 3.8J. A few days review of
the stuff I haven't used for awhile, and see if I can IPL MVS on a PC!

We know just how you feel. There's something more than just a
little thrilling about Hercules, and the thrill doesn't wear off.
The first time I IPLed MVS at home, it was on my laptop in bed. We
had the TV on, my wife was reading, I saw IEA101A, sat up, screamed
with joy and practically flipped my old IBM ThinkPad out of the
bed. MVS 3.8J might be decades old, but it's much less bloated than
its children, runs like the wind even on slow hardware (my old
laptop is a P-II 300 with 128Mb and from IPL to a complete TSO logon
is under five minutes), and the add-ons and mods in Volker's turnkey
system are great. Not only that, native TCP/IP support is on the
way (you can even help with that project if you're so inclined),
among other great retrofits and enhancements. I'm sure you'll enjoy
being Lead Systems Programmer of your own, little empire. If you're
into history, you can run OS/360 MVT 21.8 as well. HASP for SVS has
finally surfaced and Jay is in the process of investigating fitting
that to MVT. As if it weren't already exciting enough, the
excitment is mounting. Just wait 'til you IPL the first time and
see if you don't feel it!

I would totally be excited (seeing I know CICS is not available so
far...) if I would enter 'ISPF' and receive DFH2005I INVALID
TRANSACTION IDENTIFICATION - PLEASE RESUMIT" (ISPF unavailable too)
I am not that familiar with the OS you mentioned. But IBM "Big Blue"
history. I have the book "IBM 360 and Eearly 370 Systems" from MIT
Press written by those that engineered, designed and produced the
systems and software. Now, I am trying to find some hardware still
not excessively priced (I think the 370s and 4300's and 3090s are
mostly gone, I read from ibm.com and suport will soon disappear for
IBM 9021 and 9121 hardware by June 2003, and December 31, 2003 the
IBM 9221 hardware will no longer be supported. They also want to
migrate shops to VSE 2.6.2 in preparation for 2.7. Not good for
someone like me looking for old hardware for a computer museum.
With the IBM 9221 disappearing (to think around 1990 you could buy a
370-158 for $1,500.00!) fast, I fear prices will be too high for
something a museum without a Smithsonian budget could afford.

Shoot I wish I had known that I would have picked myself up one of those
-158's! Should probably check with the computer scrap dealers to see if
anything is still available thought I doubt it.

You'd be crazy to bother. You'd go broke paying for the electricity bill,
and that's after you paid the bill to install a 3-phase high-voltage power
system and an air-conditioner to keep it all cool.
A number of years ago I had the opportunity to take home a complete
dual-processor 4381 system with two 3380 controllers and 45GB or dasd. All
free and in working order. After looking at the costs to transport, install,
and run the damn thing, I had to let it all go to the junk dealer. Actually,
the company that serviced the equipment took a bunch of fans and diskette
drives, and a circuit board here and there, but most of it ended up as scrap
metal, or just plain scrap. It actually cost the company money to get rid of
the equipment, as nobody would come and pick it up and the scrap metal price
didn't offset the transportation costs.

Who said I was going to plug it in? :-)) Actually I would love to have the
main console and the VM horn (enough to wake the dead). Heck I know the thing
sucks juice, cool air and anything else. A shop I had heard about got a -155,
planned everything - except the MG and it's cooling requirements. They had to
shut the thing down periodically just to cool the room down.
Guess we all have stories to tell about the opportunity to get equipment.
Me, had a chance to get a Magnuson, complete with 3350's and tape drives. Also
could have gotten an S36 as well, but I didn't know anything about those, nor
did I want to. And lastly some 3790's and 8100's, but who in their right mind
wanted those...

I kind'a figured you wouldn't, but I just had to boast about my "almost"
4381. :-)
>Guess we all have stories to tell about the opportunity to get equipment.
Yeah. About 8 years ago the guy who serviced our 4381 told me they were on
the used market for about $500. I was shocked! That's a fraction of what a
new rack-mount cabinet would cost. But a few years later, you couldn't even
give away a 4381. Not even to ME! Even the scrap metal guys hemmed and hawed
about how much effort it was to strip it down.
