Nokia today unveiled the Nokia 7100 Series, its new line of media phones designed to enable easy access to Internet content. The new Nokia 7100 Series phones are based on Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) which enables secure access, and instant interaction with Internet/intranet information and other advanced telephony services. The Nokia 7100 Series product line in the Americas will include the Nokia 7190 (GSM 1900), available during the first half of 2000, and the Nokia 7160 (tri-mode AMPS/ TDMA 800/TDMA 1900), available during the first half of 2000.

With a Nokia developed WAP 1.1. compliant microbrowser, the Nokia 7100 Series media phones can access personalized information services via the Internet (WAP 1.1 supports images). These services can include news, weather reports, stock prices, e-mail, and flight schedules or wireless banking and electronic commerce. Many of these services are already offered by many of the leading wireless operators, and the Nokia 7100 Series media phones will greatly enhance the use of them. In order to demonstrate some of the real benefits of the Value Added Services, Nokia and CNN have today announced extension of CNN Mobile; a wireless news service that can be conveniently accessed with the Nokia 7100 Series phones, to the Americas.

The Nokia 7100 Series phones have Infrared (IrDA) for wireless communication between phone and PC or printers. Phone-to-phone infra red transfer of names, phone numbers and calendar entries also enables quick synchronization between the Nokia 7100 Series phones and PC-based contact information, calendar and to do lists. The Nokia 7100 Series also supports digital data at 9.6 kbps (TDMA) and 14.4 kbps (GSM 1900) with an integrated modem.

The Nokia 7100 Series phones also have a built-in dictionary, which assists in quickly choosing the right word for a short message (SMS). The predictive text input method is considerably faster than the ordinary way of entering text.
