Nokia Introduces the Defining Phone for the New Wireless Generation
(October 26, 2000)
New entry level Nokia 3390 phone adds popular personalization features including
downloadable ring tones and mobile messaging for North America market
Nokia today unveiled a new wireless phone designed for the next generation of wireless
users demanding a phone that reflects their lifestyle. The all-new Nokia model 3390
phone comes with more personalization options than ever for consumers in North America.
It brings the award-winning style of Nokia phones to the entry-level segment and
makes a bold fashion statement with smooth, flowing lines, backlit metallic keys
and a contrasting bezel treatment that sets it apart from the crowd.
Because the target audience of young adult wireless users will not settle for typical
stripped-down entry-level functionality, the Nokia 3390 comes equipped with a wide
range of powerful and fun features and will be available for the holiday season
2000. With downloadable profiles, four exciting new games, mobile text and picture
messaging - where supported by the carrier's network - and changeable front and
back covers, the 4.2 ounce Nokia 3390 (GSM 1900) builds on the Nokia tradition of
giving users the ability to truly customize their phones.
To match the desire the new wireless generation demonstrates for individual expression,
the Nokia model 3390 is the first mobile phone in the Americas to incorporate user-changeable
front and back Xpress-onä Color Covers, which allow the phone to be completely encased
in the latest fashionable hues. In addition to the Dark Blue cover that comes standard
on the Nokia model 3390 phone, each of the six optional colors including Polar Blue,
Himalaya White, Vesuvius Red, Iceberg Grey, Sahara Yellow and Arctic Silver, can
be mixed and matched at will, resulting in 49 possible combinations.
Recognizing the popularity of custom backgrounds, screen savers and Internet browser
'skins' with this computer-savvy market, the Nokia model 3390 phone offers downloadable
profiles that give users a new way to differentiate their phones from the pack,
both visually and audibly. After choosing and downloading a profile from the Internet,
a new screen saver and ring tone can be delivered over the air to the Nokia model
3390 phone. Once accepted, that profile, along with standard profiles such as Outdoor,
Meeting and Silent will become a menu option on the phone.
An example of a downloadable profile would be a college theme, for which the user
could download a school fight song (if available) as a ring tone. A screen saver
featuring the college logo would also be delivered and saved on the Nokia model
3390 phone as a profile named after that particular university. For the most creative
and individualistic customers, the Nokia model 3390 phone includes an on-board ring
tone composer, allowing for an infinite variety of ring tones, from the simplest
of beeps to the grandest of symphonic lines, to be created wherever and whenever
inspiration strikes.
Mobile messaging, proven worldwide as a popular two-way communication method for
the socially-active new generation of wireless users, allows users to send short
text messages from their Nokia model 3390 phone to another mobile phone, where carrier's
network supports this feature, or to an e-mail address that is incorporated. Predictive
text input makes mobile messaging fast and easy and users can also send and receive
calendar notes or reminders such as birthdays or appointments between Nokia 3390
phones.
The Nokia model 3390 phone is also picture messaging capable (*network dependent),
which allows for a simple bitmapped picture to be attached to a text message in
networks supporting the picture messaging functionality. Once a picture message
is received, it can be saved in the phone for sending to another user, or used as
a screen saver graphic.
The Nokia model 3390 phone incorporates four new games, including Space Impact and
Snake 2 to help pass time. Enhancing the gaming experience for a generation raised
on video games is "vibra-shock," which provides tactile feedback to the user during
a game session.
"Nokia pioneered the evolution of the mobile phone as a personal, stylish accessory,"
Rich Geruson, Nokia Mobile Phones senior vice president - Americas Marketing, said.
"We have built on our experience in the personalization of wireless products and
put all of the most requested features into this phone. The Nokia 3390 gives consumers
the freedom to make each aspect of their phones a reflection of themselves."
Features of the Nokia model 3390 phone include:
Predictive text input for fast and easy mobile messaging
Exceptional performance times - up to 5 1/2 days standby and 2 hours 40 minutes
of talk time with the standard battery
Internal antenna for smooth, clean lines
Internal vibrating alert for discreet calls and improved game play
Voice dialing for easy, hands free calling
Calendar with reminder notes for easy time management
Full line of Nokia Original Accessories to fit any lifestyle
Some of the listed features are network-dependent.
"Never before has Nokia offered as many features in an entry level handset as have
been made available with the Nokia 3390," Geruson added, "The easy to use interface
makes it perfect for a first-time wireless user, but the Nokia 3390 has the power
to grow with the customer as he or she becomes more experienced."
