Cingular Wireless Brings Corporate E-mail To GPRS Business Customers In Seattle This Month
Cingular Xpress Mail Also Will Be Available To Enterprises Using Cingular-Powered GSM and TDMA Phones
ATLANTA, September 11, 2001 - SAN DIEGO - WIRELESS I.T. AND INTERNET 2001 - September 11, 2001 - Cingular Wireless - the nation's leader in wireless data - takes that experience to a new level by offering the first corporate e-mail access on GPRS handsets.
The groundbreaking new enterprise solution, Cingular Xpress Mail, will be available over GPRS, GSM and TDMA phones beginning this month using a mobile software architecture developed by SEVEN, a provider of global telecommunications infrastructure. Cingular Xpress Mail will be demonstrated publicly for the first time on September 12 and 13 at the CTIA's Wireless I.T. and Internet 2001 conference at the San Diego Convention Center at Cingular Wireless' Booth #931.
Cingular Xpress Mail represents the first true GPRS business product offering. Later this month, Cingular Wireless will begin offering the service to select GPRS business customers in the Seattle area with full deployment later in the fall.
"Cingular Xpress Mail shows how Cingular Wireless is transferring the packet data expertise it has gained at Cingular Interactive to its core phone business," said Stephen Krom, Vice President of Marketing, Data and Internet Services, for Cingular Wireless. "Our decade of experience in developing key business applications will set us apart from other carriers."
GPRS customers will have always-on access to their corporate Microsoft Exchange e-mail on their handsets through Cingular Wireless Internet Express, which gives customers the flexibility to switch between an Internet session and a phone call without ever having to abandon their Internet connection or lose information they are transferring. Last month Cingular launched the first GPRS consumer product offering in Seattle.
In addition, Cingular Xpress Mail can be used on wireless Internet services for both GSM and TDMA services.
"Cingular's wireless corporate e-mail service will be the most robust - and first true - solution to date for GPRS business customers in North America when we begin deploying it later this month in Seattle," Krom said. "This groundbreaking new application gives not only GPRS but GSM and TDMA business customers an easy, yet powerful way to stay connected to their corporate e-mail and manage it when away from the desktop."
"This announcement marks a major step forward in mobile communications," said Bill Nguyen, founder and president of SEVEN. "Cingular's new enterprise service enables real-time mobile access to corporate data and applications with zero footprint behind the firewall. By ordering this service from Cingular Wireless, enterprises will avoid costly and complex mobile deployment strategies. SEVEN's mobile software architecture requires no installation of additional software or hardware at the enterprise, and enables Cingular's corporate customers to leverage their existing IT investments, saving both time and money."
Through Cingular Xpress Mail, GPRS customers can use Cingular Wireless Internet Express to view the subject headers of e-mails delivered to their desktop mailbox. The user selects the e-mails he or she wants to read and the full text of the message is delivered to the handset. GSM and TDMA customers access the service through "My Wireless Window," Cingular's wireless portal that provides safe and secure transactions and empowers customers with access to a variety of services.
The network-based corporate e-mail solution can be securely deployed by companies without having to install additional hardware or software at the enterprise's server or on a handset. Company-designated administrators simply use Cingular's Web-enabled tool to activate their employees to use the service.
Cingular Xpress Mail is a significant addition to Cingular's portfolio of corporate e-mail offerings. Cingular, which provides an extensive array of business solutions for enterprises, already offers businesses access to their Exchange- and Lotus Notes-based corporate e-mail on handhelds such as the RIM 950 and RIM 957 Wireless Handhelds™ via Cingular's Mobitex-based network.
"Businesses today need the flexibility to wirelessly communicate using the applications and devices that best fit their unique needs," Krom said. "By extending our corporate e-mail access capabilities to business customers who use handsets to wirelessly communicate, Cingular is providing its current and prospective clients the freedom to choose the way and the format in which they want to communicate with employees, customers and partners."
