Nokia Developer's Suite For J2me(TM), Version 2.0 Opens Doors To
Development Of Advanced Mobile Java(TM) Applications
MIDP 2.0 Support Standardizes Improvements in Communications, Security,
Multimedia and User Interface Capabilities for Application Developers
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, June 9, 2003 - Nokia (NYSE:NOK), the global leader in
mobility, today announced a new version of the popular java developer suite
supporting the Java Mobile Information Device Profile 2.0 (MIDP 2.0)
specification. The Nokia Developer's Suite for J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition),
Version 2.0 offers developers enhanced functionality and standardizes
development. The suite is available in two versions, supporting both Windows and
Linux platforms, and can be downloaded for free at www.forum.nokia.com/tools.
"With 2.5 million active developers, the Java community is already one of the
leading sources of innovation in the software industry," said Lee Epting, Vice
President, Developer Operations, Nokia. "Giving these developers a suite of
tools to capitalize on the added features of MIDP 2.0 is our best way to throw
open the floodgates to innovation in wireless Java application development."
The MIDP 2.0 standard, developed and implemented by the Java Community Process,
provides a cohesive platform that allows developers to create applications that
will run on all MIDP 2.0-compliant handsets. It also unlocks significant feature
enhancements in a number of areas.
Most significant among these, developers can now implement additional
communications protocols beyond HTTP, including Bluetooth and Short Messaging
Service (SMS). These protocols can now be easily integrated into any type of
J2ME programs, from games to enterprise applications.
MIDP 2.0 support also provides the ability to launch a J2ME application via an
external event such as an incoming message, or on a time-based schedule set by
the application. This functionality might be used, for example, in a stock
ticker application that alerts the user when a stock price reaches a certain
level, rather than always depending on the user to repeatedly open the
application to check the stock price.
In addition, MIDP 2.0 supports standardized HTTPS communication for secure
transmission of sensitive information. Also new in the security area is the
ability for the publisher to digitally sign applications which can then be
verified by the end user using the public/private key infrastructure to maintain
application integrity. Developers creating applications that deal with financial
or other private data now have a stable, consistent foundation on which to base
their development.
As with previous versions of the suite, Version 2.0 enables fast, simple
development in a standalone environment or as an integrated solution with
existing Java IDEs such as Sun Microsystems' Sun One Studio, Mobile Edition and
Borland's JBuilder.
Version 2.0 of the suite also includes a new emulator based on MIDP 2.0,
allowing developers to work in a MIDP 2.0 environment throughout their entire
application lifecycle, from concept through testing to deployment. The Nokia
7210 MIDP SDK, featuring MIDP 1.0 implementations, will also be included.
Additional Nokia phone SDKs are available for download from the Forum Nokia web
site.
Nokia handsets embracing MIDP 2.0 technology and displaying its full
functionality will be announced throughout the remainder of this year.

Nokia enables new business opportunities and alluring mobile services by deploying a cohesive Java(TM) technology for application development and download
June 09, 2003
As the industry forerunner Nokia brings Java MIDP2.0 support to the Series 60
Platform and to the latest version of the Nokia Developer Suite
San Francisco, CA, JavaOne 2003, June 9th, 2003 --- Nokia (NYSE:NOK), the global
leader in mobility, announced today that its Series 60 Platform will support
Java Mobile Information Device Profile 2.0 (MIDP), the latest specification for
mobile application downloading. Also, Nokia introduced the Nokia Developer's
Suite for J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), Version 2.0, with MIDP2.0 support, for
mobile application developers.
The MIDP2.0 specification, developed and implemented by the Java Community
Process (JCP), offers improvements in communications, security, multimedia and
user interface capabilities, resulting in new applications with radically
enhanced features, such as rich graphics and security. They will increase the
possibilities to build dynamic applications for enterprises, banking,
multiplayer games and numerous other areas.
"Over 10 million mobile Java applications are downloaded per month, and the
number is rapidly growing. More than 50 operators have deployed Java technology
and all leading handset vendors have committed to the technology as well," said
Timo Poikolainen, Vice President, Nokia Mobile Software. "We are pleased to be
among the first industry leaders introducing products and solutions based on the
jointly developed MIDP2.0 specification. In mobile communications, Java
technology is the enabler in providing a true mass market for the downloadable
application business," he continued.
The MIDP2.0 specification will also offer a comprehensive set of harmonized APIs
to ensure economies of scale and consistent development across different device
classes. For developers this will provide a non-fragmented, cohesive platform to
create applications that will run on all MIDP 2.0-compliant handsets.
New Series 60 features - unique benefits
Series 60 now supports Java MIDP 2.0 with the backwards compatibility to the
previous MIDP 1.0 version. This support ensures a smooth evolution from existing
Java applications to new and richer applications. The Java implementation in
Series 60 brings enhanced graphics functionality, Bluetooth APIs, support for
various secure HTTP connection types, advanced multimedia APIs, and messaging
APIs. And to ensure seamless application usability, Series 60 also uses the same
application installer and application menu for Java and native Symbian
applications.
The Series 60 Platform has also been enhanced with several other new features
that are designed to add value for licensees, developers, and operators, and to
further expand the user experience. For example, Series 60 offers expanded
possibilities for personalization. A user will be able to switch between
different sets of icons, wallpapers, screensavers, background bitmaps, and color
schemes offered by an operator or other service portal. For messaging, Series 60
now provides enriched presentation capabilities in MMS (Multimedia Messaging
Service) through enhanced SMIL**.
The Series 60 Platform is a terminal software product for smart phones that
Nokia licenses to handset manufacturers. The platform has rapidly become the
market leading software for smart phones with licensees representing
approximately 60 percent of global handset market. Panasonic, Samsung, Sendo,
Siemens and Nokia have licensed the Series 60 Platform.
The Nokia Developer's Suite for J2ME Version 2.0 offers developers enhanced
functionality and standardizes development. The suite is available in two
versions, supporting both Windows and Linux platforms, and can be downloaded for
free at www.forum.nokia.com/tools.
